Disk Administrator Snap-In

I want to convert my basic disks to dynamic disks but can't find where I get

the snap-in that allows me to do that. Does anyone know where I can get it?

Click Start, Run ( type ) DiskMgmt.Msc [Enter]

 

One open, you Right Click the Disk _ at the left edge of the pane.

From the Context menu, Choose "Convert to a Dynamic Disk".

I'm sure you've researched Dynamic Disks, just be aware of the

limitations and things that won't work after conversion.

You do it in the Disk Management Tool, there is no other snap-in. Right

click on the numbered Disk label, at the left of the partitions bar.

 

You need Xp Pro to do this, XP Home cannot do Dynamic Disks.

Thanks. Answers my question. One other thing, If I convert a basic disk with

data on it will the conversion destroy the data?

No it won't. Dynamic Disks are a totally Windows controlled. The

reason I mentioned the issues is that Dynamic Disk conversion is

generally a one-way street. If for whatever reason you are unhappy

with Dynamic you cannot revert it back to Basic without removing

all existing volumes on it. You'd be safer if you use some kind of

imaging program on the disks before you convert. Dynamic disks

are invaluable for Servers, but for home use I wouldn't recommend

you change them.
