Server responds to ping, but event log says "it is shutdown" and server realy hung up

Hello,

Our server is HP DL380 run Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition and Sql Server 2000 Standard Edition. Its role is the being the database server, no apps., no IIS.

Our server was working fine until last sunday. Last sunday, I applied the windows updates and added extra memory and added some disks, created a new array (Raid-5).

Since then the server is hung up several times. I changed one of the disks since HP software tool suggested so. It hung up a few days later. I took out the extra memory. It hung up this morning again. Th new array is barely used (just storing for few database backups).

The strange thing is that we can ping the server while it is hung up. Event log says it is shutdown. You may see below.

Event Type: Error

Event Source: EventLog

Event Category: None

Event ID: 6008

Date: 30-03-2008

Time: 12:53:32

User: N/A

Computer: FIGENSOFT3

Description:

The previous system shutdown at 02:59:40 on 30.03.2008 was unexpected.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Below is another strange recording from Event log:

Event Type: Information

Event Source: Service Control Manager

Event Category: None

Event ID: 7036

Date: 30-03-2008

Time: 03:48:54

User: N/A

Computer: FIGENSOFT3

Description:

The WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service service entered the running state.

We were able ping the server at 12:45 before we rebooted the server. Event log says it is shutdown at 02:59, but it recorded an event at 03:48. Actualy from another server, we saw "the db server was reachable" at the application logs.

Sorry for this long message, but I could not find a way resolve this problem.

I will appreciate your opinions.

-Mehmet

You'll need to describe "hung up" in much greater detail.

Hung up refers to we cannot login or remotely login to server, we cannot

connect to sql server. The server does not react to anything.

Thanks for quick return.

Hello Mark,

Check that you have the latest updates for the hardware. Download the latest

Smartstart version for the DL 380 and run that updates. Is it G5 or G4 server?

Best regards

Re: Server responds to ping, but event log says "it is shutdown" and server realy hung up

Still pretty vague but I'd look for blocking, etc. in SQL server process.
