purplehelen44 Posted June 2, 2010 Posted June 2, 2010 I am using an MSI CB54G2 cardbus wireless adapter on my laptop which runs windows XP Pro. The laptop is quite old and had started becoming very slow and crashing about 20mins after starting up. I changed my startup settings and deleted a load of programmes I don't need which has helped the speed and stopped the crashing, however my wireless adapter is now not working. I reinstalled the drivers but I still get the same error message which is: "This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12) If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system." There are no devices listing as clashing under the resources tab and I have tried all the troubleshooting tips suggested but but with no sucess. Can anyone help? Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted June 2, 2010 Posted June 2, 2010 (edited) Have you changed your bios settings while you were eliminating programs. Also, make sure of your page file settings (which you can find under computer properties using the advanced tabs.) Sorry I do not have my xp open to take you through it step by step but you are looking for "Virtual Memory" It should be set for 1.5 times your actual memory. If windows is handling this by default it should show you the current setting so if, for example you gave 1 gig og memory it should read around 1500kbs (1.5 X1000) Beyond that I will leave it to the hardware experts. LinkindinkinPark Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 eh? whats page files got to do with lack of resources? page file sizes in kilobytes per second and 1.5 times , you got me there?????? windows is having a fit cos it thinks two devices are using the same irq and dma. sometimes they do share but it only works for some devices.have a look in device manager for devices with problems, they show with a yellow exclamation or question mark, and for disabled devices shown with a red cross through them. uninstall those and reboot.see how it is could also try system restore back to when it was working, probably first thing to try I guess. BeeCeeBee Posted June 4, 2010 Posted June 4, 2010 page file sizes in kilobytes per second and 1.5 times , you got me there?????? The optimum pagefile setting is 1.5 times the physical memory as a minimum and twice that as a maximum although the latter is less important. As for its effect on the particular issue probably very little or none unless the inability to access all resources is a memory issue. Since you list yourself as a "PC Guru" it is not for me to argue with you. Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
