I am having trouble with desktop colors. All my icons are constantly surrounded by a black solid color and are not clear typed. I have tried the properties option to no success. When the problem occurred some of my other programs such as tuneup went completely white and only certain headings show and custom images and icons are no longer visible....please help :(

I'm not into registry errors, but that could be the explanation. Have you installed some crappy software? I usually get such kind of errors when I have installed something very crappy, but when I didn't know. Try going back in time with system restore

You could try this to clear the Desktop Icon cache

  1. Right-click the desktop and then click Properties.
  2. Click the Settings tab.
  3. Change the color depth from the current setting to a new setting. For example, change from Highest (32 bit) to Lowest (16 bit).
  4. Click Apply, and then click Yes to accept the changes.
  5. Change the color depth back to its original setting.
  6. Click Apply, and then click Yes to accept the changes.

Their are a couple of other suggestions on the M$ support site

Icons randomly change to different icons

Using Registry Editor, add the Max Cached Icons string value with a value data of 2000 to the following registry key, and then restart your computer:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

If the icons are still incorrect, delete the ShellIconCache file. The Max Cached Icons value data range is between 100 and 4096. The default value is 500.

There are a few possibilities here as well, first have you tried a system restore back to a time previous to this fault starting?

Next is a question, are you having other problems with it, such as unwanted adverts or other things popping up? browser pages not going to where you think they should or anything else untoward? if so it could be malware related.
