SBC product + MS Terminal Service licensing questions

Hi guys, I'm rather new to Terminal Services, and I've just got some

questions regarding the usage and licensing of Terminal Services for

Windows Server 2003.

First of, I'll start with a simple/stupid question.

Q: If I use a third-party SBC product (e.g. 2X, Thinworx, etc...)

which utilizes Windows TS, will I need to purchase TS CALs?

Now for questions more specific to MS TS.

Q: My understanding is that if I was to setup a terminal server on a

Windows Server 2003 machine, I need to install the Terminal Server

component, as well as the Terminal Server Licensing component?

Q: After that, I'm required to purchase enough CALs (per device or per

user), and install it in the Terminal Server Licensing. What is

recommended, Per Device CALs or Per User CALs?

Q: Is it ideal or recommended to install both the Terminal Server and

the TS Licensing on the same physical computer?

Q: Are there any other licenses involved?

I hope I haven't mis-understood TS completely.

Re: SBC product + MS Terminal Service licensing questions

Third party products are just application publishers like citrix, and

you

will need TS cals for accessing it, cause terminal server is required

for

all that application servers.

In the begging you don't need to install immediatelly licensing

server

because you can then extend grace period of terminal services

licensing.

Grace period is 120 days for win2003 and for 2000 it is 90days.

After grace period is over you need to purchase TS cals.

Do you use more people to access server or more devices, simple

question?

Per Device CAL is concurrent device and per user is concurrent user.

If you will have one terminal server then I (not microsoft) would

suggest

you to install everything on the same computer because you will have

no

problems regarding TSL discovering and licensing server use very few

resources.

Windows server license is involved also.

No, TS CALs are *not* per concurrent usage!

You need a Per Device TS CAL for *every* device which is used to

connect to the TS, or a Per User TS CAL for every user.
