Possible problem with motherboard? Strange POST errors...

Hi

 

Recently I came home and turned my computer on to find two blank screens. I opened the case and the POST Code was showing as C1 (occasionally flickering to C0 then back to C1 - I assume it is retrying the cycle); having checked in the manual it seems this is related to memory.

 

I have 2 sticks of memory and 4 slots. Having tried each individual stick in each of the slots, the C1 error was still displayed. I thought it would be unusual for both sticks to fail at once so I tried detaching other devices.

 

I found that when I detach the graphics card, the POST completes successfully and finishes with FF, which means it's attempting to boot.

 

If I try the graphics card in the other PCI-E slot, the POST goes through until 5d, which should be audio related. Again, if I remove the graphics card the POST completes successfully. I have tried the card in another mahcine, and it works fine.

 

As the graphics card works in another machine and the POST completes without it, does this mean there is likely to be a fault with the mainboard?

 

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Your Graphics card has 512mb of on board RAM which would explain the memory fault and it being resolved by removing the card. I would also make me think that that their is a fault with the card, BUT, as you've tried it in a different machine that brings us back to the Motherboard :(

 

have you tried resetting the Bios and blowing the PCI slot clean?

 

have you looked on the motherboard to see if you can see any blown capacitors, if you look carefully they will be bulging at the top

Normally the ones round the CPU go first but it might be worth looking round the PCI slots first

Thanks for the reply. I reset the BIOS but to no avail; had a good look around the motherboard but couldn't see any bulging capacitors.

 

Someone suggested it could be PSU related so I'll see if changing that does the trick. otherwise I suppose it may be time for an upgrade.

Could be the PSU, Unlikely as its its a post error, but still possible. ;) and as it's about the only thing you have left to rule out,so you may as well, :)
