Hi, please help ,not sure if posted in rigt place,

our house got struck by lightning which took out lnb, digibox, phones and pc. I am trying to fix the pc and have put in a new psu. The mobo is an asus A7N8X-X.

When I switch my pc on ,the fan on top of the cpu spins as well as the fan in the psu for about 2 seconds and then stops. The light on the start button remains on but nothing happens. To try again I have to disconnect the mains power cable and reconnect and exactly the same thing happens each time. The green light stays on on the mobo while the mains power cable is connected.

Any ideas please

regards

dc

I am by no means a hardware expert but I assume you changed the PSU because nothing was happening at all and that it was, in fact, damaged or destroyed by the strike. The fact that the MOBO light is lit at least lets you know that there is power but does not rule out the possibility (probability?) that it got fried along with the PSU.

Well then if the results are the same (green light etc.) it would seem that the mobo was what got hit. If it were the hard drive (or only the hard drive) you would get some kind of post screen. I would suggest you wait for a real hardware specialist to reply but it does not look good.

Hi, it does indeed look like the motherboard got hit, it may also have taken or damaged other things as well, the probable costs of replacing, first the motherboard, to then find the CPU also fried, then possibly the hard drive as well it may well be best to start again with a new PC.

The hard drive may still be OK, and if so, any vital data can be recovered and transferred to the new machine if needed.

Let us know which way you want to go and we can advise as needed.

Hi again, if it is exactly the same model of motherboard you may be OK, but if it is a different model you may find the operating system will refuse to start. If that happens it will be because Windows will see a new environment and give a stop error.

In this case the only cure is a Windows repair, which will mean having a full copy of the Windows operating system disk, and not just a recovery disk or disks.

I assume it is as in your profile Windows Vista? Do you have the disk or can you obtain one?

Let us know if you do find a problem with the operating system failing to start with the new motherboard.
