According to these blokes, Microsoft has shown improvements in their handling of vulnerability disclosures, but Apple seems to be sliding backwards. The writer surmises that the problem could be the relationship between the Apple and the crackers.* In order to maintain their image of invulnerability, Apple isn't keen on acknowledging holes in their OS/applications. So when researchers discovere holes, then they are more likely to sit on them until events like this come round.

Microsoft has the right approach here.
