Hello all

In a bout of upgradeitis I purchased this graphics card:

Zotac GeForce 9800 GT Synergy 1024MB PCI-Express GDDR3 PCI-Express Graphics Card [ZT-98GEY3M-FDL] Graphics and Video NVIDIA Graphics Plus 9800 Series

I was going to get an ATI HD 4670 because they don't use much power, but then I saw the Nvidia which also purportedly doesn't need much power. I'm upgrading from an 8500gt so thought it would be sensible to stick with Nvidia.

I've installed the card, the fan spins round, but it's not showing up under Device Manager.

Is this because I only have a 300w psu? I suspect it is, but would appreciate confirmation. The documentation with the card recommends 400w but I wasn't sure it this was exaggerated.

Many thanks

Jim

Hi

I am no expert but have 8600gt and is near the top end limit for a 300w.

Also 9800gt will need extra power from the supply thru a connecter , which my dell 300w PSU hasnt got.

Cheers Kev

Depending on which version of the 9800GT you have they draw either 70Watt or 105Watt depending on the die of the chip. That being said if its an Unbranded PSU then it may struggle, turning the fan is one thing powering the card is something else entirely.

If it has the 6Pin PCIE connector and you are using 2x Molex into a 6pin PCIE make sure that the 2x Molex dont have anything else on the same chain such as splitters, fan passthroughs etc.

Have you installed the latest drivers for the card and not using the old ones?

Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers

Yours is a 9 series not 9M, then select your OS and download the driver.

MAKE sure that you remove the old driver and restart the PC BEFORE installing the new one :)

Thanks fellas.

The card doesn't require an external power input, it's one of the new breed of lower power 9800s, which is why I thought I might be OK.

I'm not surprised to find the PSU might be at fault though. Any thoughts on choosing a new one? ATX is a standard size, right? So I just need to see what connectors are on the one I have at the moment and go for something with similar plugs?

Hopefully I can pick one up fairly cheaply. Best to get something quality though, Zalman, Antec, Corsair, that sort of thing huh.

Cheers!

Hi Jimin, before going to the expense of a new PSU, do check the drivers first as Dalo suggested, if drivers or lack of correct drivers are the issue then a new PSU, although may be ideal for the job, will still not get it to work.
