Hello:

For details see:

Press Release: newest version of avast! antivirus released

http://www.avast.com/eng/press-release-avast-4-8-released.html

avast! antivirus Home Edition, anti-spyware & anti-rootkit for Windows

http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Free antivirus - avast! 4 Home Edition

http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-free-home-antivirus-antispyware.html

Note that the new v4.8 still supports Win 9x/ME, although not all features

are supported on these older platforms.

But the good news is that there is still a good anti-malware package that

currently supports these older platforms!

Cheers,

O.J.

P.S. Sorry for the cross-post.

Thanks. Odd, I had mine set to "ask when update is available"-- but it

didn't! Anyhow, the Update Now button worked...

Information about current update:

Total time: 19:12

- Program: Updated

(previous version: 4.7.1098, updated version: 4.8.1169)

- Vps: Already up to date

(current version 080401-0)

- Setup: Updated

(previous version: 4.7.1098, updated version: 4.8.1169)

Server: download634.avast.com (75.125.190.82)

Downloaded files: 28 (2,350.44 KB)

Download time: 7:01

Afterwards, all seems well, & all my avast! settings & my OE & IE

avast!-related settings were intact.

| But the good news is that there is still a good anti-malware package

| that currently supports these older platforms!

Yea. Despite the few peccadilloes,...

(a) It didn't inform me of this program update.

(b) Though clicking the Update Now button did get it--

I wasn't informed to reboot afterward, & there

was a TON of stuff inside Wininit.ini!

© It gives me a false alarm on one file that is

inside a RioPort self-executable (SetUpMDM.exe).

(d) It doesn't seem to go inside every self-executable

.exe to scan the files inside. Noteably, it won't go

the MS "USA8" self-executables.

(e) It can cause harmlessly lost icons (the little ones

left of program & folder names). But that can be

avoided, & they do return at reboot anyhow.

(f) Its update process includes pauses without

warnings to wait.

.... I remain pleased with avast! Home Edition. It does do a lot very

well!

| Cheers,

| O.J.

|

| P.S. Sorry for the cross-post.

Uh-oh! I see it says one must upgrade instead of update...

"Please note that you must upgrade to Avast v4.8.1169, not update Avast

v4.7 (You do not need to uninstall your current version.)"

Why!? I did the update last night! I see it says...

"An input validation error within the 0xb2d60030 IOCTL handler of the

aavmker4.sys driver can be exploited e.g. to overwrite arbitrary kernel

memory via a specially crafted IOCTL request."

But I have no Aavmker4.sys file in my avast! 4.8.1169 Home Edition, & I

know there was none in my v.4.7.1098 either. Can this be a Professional

Edition problem only, or can it apply only to XP/Vista versions?

Took the v8 update as an *update*, what am I supposedly looking for as far

as issues related to this way of updating verses the over-install with the

full download?

BTW PCR: AVAST update DID request to shutdown the computer after the update

on this computer.

I think Bear went back into his Antarctic cave to continue his

Interesting. Maybe I didn't wait long enough for the request. There are

inordinant pauses during avast!'s update procedures! But all seems to be

well. Well, does your Wininit.bak look just like this...

Re: newest version of avast! antivirus released v4.8

Well then, I think we have confirmed that the AVAST program update was

successful on two 98SE machines, though if you read Pa's posting properly,

that is what he suggested, updating the program to the new version, NOT

updating just the defs/vps in the old program, particularly for the NT OSs..

I did, however, just update the program on a VISTA machine without

downloading the entire file, but via the program update function. Only

noticeable issue was the pop-up window stating it was not specifically

written for VISTA. That also required a shutdown/restart

Thanks Pa, just a discussion, not a drag over the coals,,,,

I went through several discussions on the AVAST forum, noting other

compatibility issues {specific program issues}; noted some supposed

corrections which have been auto addressed via other updates; so the issue

is whether XP and VISTA users should still be advised to download the new

4.8 or whether the program update feature will suffice.

As you are associated with [obviously] aumha, has your board addressed

issues related to this activity [beyond what is already linked here] to

which users can be directed?

Okay, for those XP and VISTA interested users, try the links Pa provided,

and take specific note of potential issues related to VISTA and SP1 related

to AVAST [and FYI - several other Anti-virus and other programs, try your

specific application's support forum for advise]. It appears that it may be

advisable to wait to install SP1 until Microsoft gets some of the bugs

corrected and/or application programmers can effect the necessary changes to

their respective programs.

You are welcome. We try to keep up with issues that 9X/ME users may be

having or which should be advised of, and potential personally TESTED work

arounds if necessary, in addition to the standard issues involved with the

9X/ME Windows products.

Contrary to advertising and marketing, there are still hundreds of

thousands of 9X/ME users [including in the business environment], many of

which still connect to the Internet, and still require security to do so.

Personally, I still believe the OS is viable, but one must continue to

protect one's own system/network.

Sounds like you have the plan.

Users of 9X/ME can feel somewhat more secure, at the moment, than users of

other Windows, as most of the present hacks and attacks are levied at the NT

OSs. Of course there are still viruses being produced, and the old

backorifice and other hacks are still rampant on the net. And, most of the

email/like hacks are just as effective on 9X/ME as any other OS. So, as has

always been the case, never ASSUME you are protected, even if you seem to be

running the necessary programs. Cross checking with other protection

products may catch things that were missed by whatever was installed and

relied upon.

Of course, updating - keeping the programs current, is mandatory, along

with checking any logs you or the program creates..

She too is saying Aavmker4.sys is the vulnerable component. But there is

no such file in my avast! 4.8.1169 for Win98. And there wasn't any in my

v.4.7.1098, either. Also, Donna says... "Solution: Update to version

4.8.1169." She doesn't say to upgrade, although she does post the site

for the full download, yea.

| As far as overinstalling the new version vs updating the old version,

| I took that from some Avast Support page IIRC.

I'm thinking that might apply to XP &/or Vista only, which are

irradiated OS & naturally may need an upgrade.

| You can post your Avast questions to the official forum:

I see lots of new posts there. It will take time to read through them--

but thanks!
