Hi Steve,

I would suggest setting the Bios to its default settings. You can do this by pressing F1, F2 or maybe the delete key when starting up your computer ( depends on Bios ). Once in the bios you should be looking for an instruction that says "Fail safe" or Default settings.

I thought I knew today...I'll try again tomorrow. :)

Hi

Try clearing the CMOS by removing the battery for about half an hour.

See if that helps.

Ok Steve, Try this...

I assume that you are getting into safe mode via tapping the F8 key during boot, which opens up the Windows Advanced Options Menu.

Try the option that says Last Known Good Configuration.

If that doesn't work try this:

From the Advanced Options Menu choose Safe Mode With Command Prompt.

If you've not seen it before, the command prompt window is black with white text. A cursor will already be flashing for you, inviting you to type a command.

Type the following text with no gaps.

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

Now press the Enter/Return key.

Follow the instructions given..

Let us know how you get on.

I thought I knew today...I'll try again tomorrow. :)

thanks PseFrank, i tried the Last Known Good Configuration part but that didnt work also the system restore i carnt do as its a new hard drive and only the os has been added to it. i can get to the Windows Advanced Options Menu but thats not how i get into safe mode, when i start the computer up it gives me a message saying "warning! now system is in safe mode. please re-setting cpu or memory frequency in cmos setup" so its booting itself into safe mode.

LinkindinkinPark i took out a pentium D cpu and yes i checked to see if a pentium 4 was compatable with my motherboard and in the board manual it says it is.

any more ideas to try guys???

I'm probably way off on this and it's not my area of expertise but would you mind clearing up some confusion on my part?

You put in a new CPU and hard drive and then installed Windows on the drive. Can you tell us if this is correct?

Did you put in the drive first then install Windows? Then after that add the new CPU?

Did you add the new CPU and then the hard drive. Followed by installing Windows?

How did you install Windows? Was it from a full retail disk?

The order of things you did and exactly at what point the issue occured might offer a clue.

It's likely none of the above is an issue but it might be. Like I said it's not my area.

hi randyl,

yes i have put in a new cpu and hard drive and then installed windows on to the drive.

and i installed windows from a copy but have had no problems with the copy before.

the problem first occured when i created a user account and the default admin account didnt disappear so i restarted the pc and then got the message saying "warning! now system is in safe mode. please re-setting cpu or memory frequency in cmos setup" and have been stuck in safe mode since.

So the computer did work after you put in the new CPU. It also worked after you put in the new drive and installed Windows.

It stopped working after you made a settings change.

I would say the best thing to do is install Windows from a legitimate set of Windows disks rather than some copy of a Windows operating system.

yes the copmputer did work after i put the cpu and the new drive but by default windows has a admin account and when you create a new user account the default is ment to dissapear but it hasnt and windows boots straight into the default admin account when in safe mode.

also some times it wont boot into windows, i get the message "warning! now system is in safe mode. please re-setting cpu or memory frequency in cmos setup"then under this message it says press f1 to continue or del to enter setup.

if i press f1 it still just boots into the default admin account.

This seems to not be legal installation of Windows. Not only would it be against our rules to assist with that many illegal copies of Windows are fraught with issues. This is why I suggested what I did. Since the system is probably just set up now would be the time for a reinstall.

Stop trying to run off that copy, go and buy a proper new Windows disk. Randy has already pointed out the installation is not legal from that copy, we cannot help when we know it is a copy and not a genuine new Microsoft Windows disk.

Let me see if I can give you a better answer. It appears to everyone that the problem is not the CPU no matter what the error message may say. As a result nobody here is going to offer you help. Pirated copies carry all sorts of problems and give off all sorts of bad information when they fail.
