Problem opening a picture in an email

Recommended Posts

Posted

I have two computers, each using Outlook Express 6 and WindowsXP Home. On

each I tried opening a picture embedded in an email by right clicking the

picture and selecting Save As.

On computer 1, the file opens "Save Picture" and allows a normal save as

JPEG.

On computer 2, I get an error message. "Can't find the file specified". The

help button identifies the missing file as

c:\windows\sysyem32\mshtml.hlp

I checked both computers' folders and find that each contains two files:

mshtml.dll and mshtml.tlb. In other words, neither has the "missing" file.

What's the explanation?

Simply it doesn't exist!.

Open a run command and type in:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

regsvr32 mshtml.dll

regsvr32 shdocvw.dll

regsvr32 browseui.dll

Reboot your machine and try the save as, does it help?.

If it doesn't try to run this command:

sfc /scannow click [OK] and let it run.

Re: Problem opening a picture in an email

Hi PT,

Both computers are missing c:\windows\sysyem32\mshtml.hlp

But that is beside the point. What you want to achieve is to be able to save

As pictures on Computer 2.

A common cure for this sympton is to clear your internet cache.

In IE, select Tools>Internet Options - General tab, Delete Files button.

Are both computers up to date with Windows Updates?

It may be a good idea to ensure that you have the latest patches and

updates.

Regards.

Re: Problem opening a picture in an email

In the security options, do you have the "block images...", or "do not allow

harmful attatchments..." items checked?

Are you using the same level of security on both machines.

Re: Problem opening a picture in an email

I emptied the cache and ran Windows Update to update IE7. Same problem. I

can't account for the difference in behavior on the two machines

Do a thorough check for malware, following all of the steps at one of these

Web pages.

Help with malware:

All MS-MVP Sites.

Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?

For quite a few people it's by installing programs like Messenger Plus,

whose ads for malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince

you that you owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see

what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure

of.

Re: Problem opening a picture in an email

Possible solutions in no particular order.

1. System Restore to a time before the problem began.

2. sfc /scannow.

3. Reset IE7.

*Report back, please*

RE: Problem opening a picture in an email

You're not the only one with this copy problem. I've been reading several

forums. The consensus is that OE 6 is incompatible with IE 7. I can't

believe this is the case. I right clicked a pic last week, in my email and

saved it. Now I get the missing MSHTML.HLP file error too on the same

picture. Has anyone found the solution???
