Win2008 Evaluation upgrade to Win2008 Standard Server Lizence

Hi,

did anyone here upgrade his evaluation copy of WIN 2008 Server into a regular Lizense? How to do? Do I have to delete the whole installation and reinstall the server and all installed programms and data? Or do I have just to put in a lizense key somewhere?

Something else to do while upgrading?

Thank you for any help.

Hello

That is correct, that should work fine to change the product key.

Thanks,

Hi, thank you, I will give it a chance as soon I receive the new product

key, it is ordered allready. One more question: Will there be severe

differenties between the evaluation copy that is installed now and the final

product? Or will those things be updated within the automatic updates?

Re: Win2008 Evaluation upgrade to Win2008 Standard Server Lizence

Hi Darrell,

no it is not possible, it allways tells me that it is probably not a valid Product key. But the key is OK and is not bought on black market etc.

So it seems that I have to reinstall the whole system´and than use the new key.

Re: Win2008 Evaluation upgrade to Win2008 Standard Server Lizence

Hello,

Is this a beta copy rather than an evaluation copy?

Beta is completely different than released Evaluation copies.

The eval media available for download will take the product key.

If you are using beta then the product key will not work and you will need

to reinstall with released bits.

If you run start then Winver what is reported?

Thanks,

Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

Re: Win2008 Evaluation upgrade to Win2008 Standard Server Lizence

Hi Darrell,

it reports:

Microsoft Windows Server Version 6.0 Build 6001 Servicepack 1, v.275

Evaluation copy.

The License was run out 2 days ago.

Can it be that the key is not accepted because the ordered product is OEM for system builders? This server is installed on a completely new hardware, but it was needed and ordered at a time the final version was not available (indeed finally I got the ordered copy today). My customer did not want to install the "old" 2003-server if there is a chance that 2008 server is running on his new hardware, so we decided to install the evaluation until final 2008 is available.

Do OEM-versions not allow to write the key over the key from the evaluation copy?

Re: Win2008 Evaluation upgrade to Win2008 Standard Server Lizence

Hello,

That is a beta version, not released code that is why you have the issue.

You have an RTM product key, but the copy you have installed is a beta

version of the OS.

You can try upgrading, but the recomendation would be to clean install.

This is an earlier version of the beta, it's not even the RC1 release which

would have been v.668.

Thanks,

Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

OK, Darrell, thank you. More work, but I think in this situation it is

better to reinstall.
