Guest Chris Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 I need to replace the old file server (FS1, windows 2000) with a new server (FS1a, windows 2003). I want the new one to keep the same name and IP from the old one. Also, I need to keep the old one online for a few months. Need someone to verify my steps. 1. on FS1, assign a new IP. Then right-click on My computer, Properties, Computer Name, Change. Type in FS1old as the new name. Verify authentication and reboot. 2. In AD reset the computer account, FS1. 3. On FS1a, assign the IP used by FS1. Then use the same procedure to rename FS1a to FS1. Reboot. I tnink that's all, right? Thanks.

Guest Chris Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 Re: replacing an old server with the same name Meinolf, thanks for your reply. I'll check DNS but in my case there should be no DNS change for FS1. The new server will take over the old server name and IP. The old server will get a new name and IP, which need to be updated in DNS. If I rename a server to a NEW name I don't need do anything. But here I need to rename to an existing computer account. Because of the name existing I need either delete it or reset the account. Then I can rename the server to that account. Right? Guest Meinolf Weber Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 Re: replacing an old server with the same name Hello Chris, You rename FS1 to FS1old, so this change "removes" FS1 from DNS and AD, ofcourse it is the same SID. But FS1 at the moment after the reboot will disappear and before your rename the new one to the old name these changes ahs to replicated.
