Can't find program startup command

The program "Microsoft Chat" launches upon bootup. I can't find the shortcut

or command that causes it. It is not under the MSCONFIG startup tab. Where

should I be looking for it and how do I stop the program from launching upon

startup?

Also, in Win XP you can put a shortcut in

"C:\documents&settings\usersname\start menu\programs\startup" to have a

program launch upon bootup. What is the equivalent action in Win98SE?

Go into Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add - Remove Programs > Windows

remove Chat 2.5. IF you updated this, first check in Install / Uninstall for

an entry and remove that as well. IF MSN was installed, remove it as well,

You do the same by going to %windir%\Start Menu, or by dragging a shortcut

or pasting a shortcut into Start > Programs > StartUp.

Re: Can't find program startup command

It's executable is CCHAT.EXE. You don't find that anywhere? Use REGEDIT to

search for that executable. Anything odd pop up?

Answer to your second question is C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\

Re: Can't find program startup command

I unclicked "Microsoft Chat" under communications as per your reccomendation.

Now I get an error message that a shortcut can't find CCHAT.EXE. Where is

this shortcut so I can delete it? This shortcut was probably the item that I

wanted in the first place.

Couple of places:

1. Look in %windir%\SendTo.

2. Look in Start > Programs > StartUp.

3. Search the registry entries for cchat.exe.

4. Search/Find > Files and Folders > the drive, for cchat.exe in text.

And you may have been able to get rid of the error otherwise, but to get

rid of cchat [which was at one time used as a hack point] you need to do as

I suggested. Now just perform a cleanup.

I looked inside a file named Cchat25.inf in the Windows\Inf directory

and found the following lines:

CChat_LINK = "Microsoft Chat"

CChatDir = "Microsoft Chat"

CChatExe = "CChat.exe"

Program_Files = "Program Files"

CChat_conv = "Microsoft Chat Conversation"

CChat_short = "Microsoft Chat Room Shortcut"

I'd go to Start > Find > Files or Folders and search for files/folders

Named "chat".

I suspect you will find a shortcut named "Microsoft Chat Room

Shortcut.lnk" or "Microsoft Chat.lnk".

Start msconfig, click the "Startup" tab, scroll to the right and look for "cchat.exe".

If you find it, uncheck it and click "OK".

With one user profile, try "C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup".

If there is more than one user profile, look for

"C:\Windows\Profiles\profilename\Start Menu\Programs\Startup"

Re: Can't find program startup command

I found the shortcut that was looking for CCHAT.EXE. It had a misleading

name of "HP Imaging". Deleting the startup shortcut "HP Imaging" solved the

problem.

Good, so another HP, ah, gimmick, err, support feature was found as

unnecessary. HP Imaging is part of HP's printer software installation,

likely part of the online support..
