tigerpilot1 Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 Need some help. Acer Aspire One - XP Wireless strength perfect. Several programs like anti-virus, google earth etc. update so they are getting web access. However when I try to open Firefox or I.E. I'm in trouble. Firefox says something like the page was reset while connecting, and I.E says the page cannot be displayed. Same results with computer connected directly into the router. Hopefully I have changed something easy to fix. No errors in device manager and everything else seems O.K. I certainly appreciate any help. Regards, Don Naples FL Address removed Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 It seems to me that the trouble may be with your home page rather than the browser. If you set your home page to a site that is down you will get an error message. Type another address in the address bar or click on a bookmark and see if this is happening with other sites. Another word of caution here. It is never a good idea to post your email address on a public forum. There is no way of keeping bots, spiders and even people from using that to spam you or even get you to download malicious programs. I wish I could remove it for you but I can't. I am sure someone will come along who can. Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain

No bookmark sites work or manually entering something lliike eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices doesn't work either. Thanks Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 Since this seems to be happening in both firefox and IE it is probably not the browser settings but I would check all your security and privacy settings to be sure. What firewall are you using and have you checked to make sure that you are not blocking these browsers. Try disabling it briefly and see if that solves the problem and let us know so we can help you with settings. The fact that you are getting program updates leads me to believe that it is not your TCP/IP settings but it may be worth the time to check them as well. If you need help with that just shout as well. Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain

Let's try and see if we can correct the problem on one of the browsers first before proceeding with the other. I am going to try to fix Firefox first because I am more comfortable with it. Please do the following. 1. Open Firefox. 2. Click on the Tools menu and select Options. 3. Switch to the Advanced tab and then click on the Network tab under it. 4. Click on the Settings box under Connection. 5. Check the option that says Use system proxy settings. 6. Close Firefox and re-open it. Please do the above steps and then try connecting to a website. Let us know if it helps or not. Good luck. :) -- Goku Quote
Mathmosman Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 I've just had to do a complete PC recovery, and when I click to open IE6 (the version I get with my recovery) it crashes before I can do anything. I changed the home page, as detailed about. I changed it to google.co.uk... Clicked on install google chrome, but before I could do anything, it crashes. How can I install any other browsers, or indeed update IE if it crashes so quickly. After experiencing malware meltdown earlier today, I feel at wits end. Quote
Mathmosman Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 I appear to have sorted my issue, but now literally every page is "The Page cannot be displayed". Tried what, 20 times to upgrade to IE8. Quote

aeshwilson12 Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 Hello, Recently, my area had a wind storm, and I lost power for nearly a week. The power is back on now and it seems my computer is not able to browse the web (tried IE and FF3), although I am able to IM through MSN, AIM, Yahoo!, etc. and play online games such as WoW. My computer was perfectly fine before the power went out. My computer is connected to a Wireless network in the same room through a Netgear router connected to an Insight Broadband cable modem. I am pretty sure this is a problem with just my computer as I am able to browse the internet (and ask this question) on my parents computer and my mom's laptop, which all connect to the same router. I have found that I am also able to ping any website. Also, I am not able to system restore. This has been very troublesome for me for the past week since my power has been back on and I would love to fix it as soon as possible, as it is very inconvenient having to use my parents computer. Thanks to anybody who is willing/able to help! My computer Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 3 Also, if you need any more information, please ask! Quote
