Does anyone have Diskeeper 9 running on Win98 ?

When I try to run I get an error "Can't launch Diskeeper from C:drive" :

I've tried updating to 9.0.532 and the errors get worse, like "Can't find

Diskkeeper service" and some horrible message about can't find files ?

Anyone sucessful in getting this running, or is there a better alternative

for defragging hard drives in a Win98 OS ?

To answer your second point, using the 'defrag.exe' from Windows Me

produces very satisfactory results, and it's quicker than the native 98

version.

According to the on-line manual, version 9 should work on windows 95 or

higher.

http://files.diskeeper.com/pdf/Diskeeper9Home_Manual.pdf

You might try uninstalling all of Diskeeper, then reinstalling the basic

verison 8 or 9, but skip the update. Or, if you are brave, re-download the

update and try again. As always, be sure to turn off all user prorgams and

your antivirus while installing. Reboot, even if not required. Then, be

sure the antivirus is back on, then test Diskeeper.

Contacting Diskeeper support might also prove useful. Be sure to give them

the specs on your PC, versions of products, and include any near-operating

system type of software (e.g., antivirus, firewall, antispyware, utilities,

etc).

As for other defraggers, I was happy with the one that came with Norton

Utilities around 2001, while I had win98. But, once I switched to XP Norton

did a lot less useful things. I do not know about the current Norton

defragger, or whether they even support 98 anymore.

Running diskeeper 8.0 on XP w/SP2. Executive software keeps sending their

email requests to update to their current versions since then. Nor did I go

for the online update for version 8.0. If it ain't broke, don't fix it as

they say.

I use the Window Millenium version of defrag in 98SE myself.

Hello:

If you are going to use the MS Defrag.exe utility, whether the Win 98 or ME

version, using a freeware utility called ScanDefrag will help it run better.

I found that it works better for me than even running defrag in safe mode.

For more info, see: http://www.blueorbsoft.com/scandefrag/ .

Cheers,

O.J.

Hello Again:

I forgot to mention that Diskeeper Lite v7.0 runs on Win 98/ME and is

freeware (actually it's nag-ware as it has a nag start-up screen that

advertises upgrading to the full version) and available at:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1207 .

Cheers,

O.J.
