Where's my audio device?

My PC originally was installed with Win ME, then upgraded to XP. Following a recent hard disc problem, I have had a new hard disc fitted, and XP installed. But I can't get any sound, and in Device Manager (sounds and audio devices properties), it says there is no audio device. Any suggestions what the problem is? Thanks.

check your bios to see if the audio is turned off.

is it onboard sound or a pci card.

do you know the make of sound card you have,

Hi Danzil,

just checked the bios, i think. In Features Setup, there is a bit that says Onboard AC'97 sound - enabled. Is that it?

Not sure whether my card is on board or PCI, how can I check?

How can the bios recognise it but not Windows?

You could try updating the drivers/codecs for your system. Try this link.

Installing the right drivers for XP and your sound should reslove the issues.

Unless your onboard sound is failing. I think that means a motherboard issue which would be more of a concern. First things first. Try installing the drivers.

 

Lastly if it's just the onboard sound that is failing you could buy a sound card but I wouldn't. If the motherboard is failing why throw away good money.

 

Most likely you just need to install the correct drivers.

you say you ave ac97.

do you know what the model is

is it cmedia sis or realtek, if it is realtek follow RandyL's advice.

try downloading adia32 or everest, then click on multimedia audio this will tell you the exact make of your sound card. have you checked in device manager to see if its installed( and what make ).

do you have front audio on your pc case.is this wired in correctly.

First I downloaded the realtek driver that RandyL suggested and installed that. But still no sound.

I downloaded Everest and ran that. Under Multimedia I have two items - Windows Audio and PCI/PnP Audio. When I click on the second one, it gives me the description SiS 7012 Audio. Does this help?

In device manager, there is a yellow exclamation mark next to the realtek AC97 Audio device, when I click it, it says the device cannot start (Code 10). Did I get the wrong driver?

Also, in Sound and Audio Devices, under the Volume tab, it stills says no audio device. Under the Audio and Voice tabs, it's using the Modem#0 line device, which is something to do with the Windows audio. Please any other clues?

if your sound card is on board.the blue/green/pink phono (headphone connection)will be near you usb's (around near the silver plate at the back called an I/O panel usually

if not it will be near all the blanking plates at the bottom of your tower or desktop.

where it says on board ac97 is enabled is good.what you need to find is what ac97 model it is, have you looked in device manager.

what model of motherboard do you have.

is there any yellow exclamation marks in device manager, if so what do they point too.

do you have a on board audio on the front of your case, how long has this issue been going on,wha changed to cause it

hmmm tried that. I downloaded the file. Extracted the files. Ran Setup from the top directory. It starts to install, then I get an error message in the "UpdateDriverForPlugAndPlayDevices" box. The message is -536870397. I click OK then the next error message in the "SiS PCI Audio Driver Setup - Installshield Wizard" box is Fail to install audio driver for Windows XP. Setup will now exit.

Not quite sure what to try next!
