a little help please!

hi i have a philips iqon pc bought a few years ago now but the motherboard has gone. can anyone tell me where i could purchase a new one? i have no idea what sort of board i need.

Hmmm, its not quite as simple as getting a new MOBO unfortunatley.

It supports an Intel Celeron D processor and comes with 512Mb of RAM.

 

Personally if this were me I would buy a more modern MOBO, CPU and RAM, so if you can let us know your budget we can source the best value for you.

 

As you say that you are PC Illiterate, it may be 'easier' for you to get a friend or a local PC shop to do the installation for you, Dont get me wrong we can talk you through the process step by step but it depends how comfortable you would feel building the PC yourself :)

well i dont want to spend much at all really. its only a family comp that doesnt get used a great deal. so theres no way i can just buy a replacement motherboard and put it in?

Yes, you can just buy a replacement Motherboard, but you need to know what type of RAM you have, and what socket Pentium D it is and the Iqon PCs were discontinued in 2006 so its not easy to find info on them.

unfortunatly i dont. is there any way i can find out just by looking at it? if i was to look for a modern one with RAM etc like you said what sort of price would i be looking at for just a very basic one so the family can use the net?

It may sound daft, but take one of the RAM sticks out (there are 2 tabs, one at the top and one on the bottom of each stick) they are normally white and you can just lift them up/down to release them and then pull the RAM stick out.

As for the CPU, that's not as easy i'm afraid, but we can do that later :) just done more research and some of them came with AMD chips too.... we will get there dont worry
