Sorry if i'm new to all this, but i really need help with a problem that came about earlier today...

My Hp computer has been linked up via VGA to my 19' LCD TV for a year now. today i swapped my TV for an old CRT monitor (via VGA obviously) because i was having a blue tint to my screen on my TV Monitor. I have since found out that this is due to my old/dodgey VGA cable.

In the mist of struggling i seem to have delted my graphics card (not totally sure on this).

Here is an outline of my problem:

1) Windows starts up fine with the boot screen (At this stage i can see the display.)

2) When the log on screen would come on, the screen stays blank. (I can still use my keyboard to log on, so the problem is the display, as i can hear the welcome music once i enter my password. But i cannot see anything.)

3) When i try to start up via Safe mode, the prcoess halts on one of the lines of (code maybe?)

Can anyone help my resolve this issue please. Is there any other information i need to disclose to help identify the problem?

Many Thanks, Kade. :)

If you cant enter safe mode you are going to struggle. Most problems like this can be sorted from within safe mode.

Windows should 'auto' detect that you have a driver missing for the GPU and then install the windows default one. Have you checked that the pins on either end of the VGA/DVI cable are all there?? as this is a common problem

If none of the above work then you need to do the below

Do you have your OS (Operating System) CD?

you need to boot from this and run a repair.

Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)

Asus P5K premium black pearl

4GB OCZ Reaper 8500

260GTX

it began to work through safe mode, but then it paused at one of the loading options? would it help if i state which line it stops at?

all the pins are there and seem fine, but i know they are defective somehow because i can wiggle it and it will affect the colour of the screen. My only confusion with this is why the display works on the boot up screen, then disappears when the log on screen should come up.

I bought my PC in 2004 from Comet, i can never remember it coming with the windows cd :/

Does this seem to be a prob with my OS or display?

i might try another VGA cable to eliminate the option.

it could be a problem with the VGA or maybe the driver ??? your laptop wouldnt have come with a windows cd but a partion where you can recover the computer with and then u can recover the computer by that or burning it onto a CD this should be in your instruction maunal that came with your computer. I would try another VGA cable and tell us what happens next.

i tried the old CRT monitor that i originally connected my PC temporarily to.

i am having the same problem with this one. (display disappers upon log o menu).

i pressed tab twice then entered my password (whilst not being able to see what i was doing). this logged me on as i heard the welcome music.

when i originally linked my pc to the CRT (when the initial blue screen tint occured) i remember going into my controll panel then clicking on the graphic controller cross box. i may have changed these settings or even deleted the controller. the blue tint was actually because of the bad VGA cable. then once i restarted i've been having this prob.

so i am now on my home screen yet can't see anythng. is there a keyboard shortcut i could press to reset any changes or check for new hardware maybe? i can still do activity on my PC see.

Thanks for your cooperation so far both! :)

Note: I am usuing my sisters laptop who is on Vista,to post o this forum.

i seee well a good idea would be to use VNC if u are on a network (both computers) id try and connect to your computer though your sisters laptop.

go to start and search Remote Desktop connection

then the tricky bit is finding the IP of your computer. Id log on to the router and see what Ip connections that are currently in use, then id try them to seee if you can connect to the computer.

Do you have any other VGA ports on your computer if soo i would try the other ports so see if you can see it on them

I connected my laptop to my router via ethernet cable. this allowed my to gain access to my router and then find my PCs ip address.

the Remote Desktop Connection wizard says it cannot connect. i don't think my PC was connected to the same network. This would be the cause of the problem i suppose? Could i do this via shortcut on my PC? a command prompt etc. i can still work my pc as said, just not see what i'm doing. so if you have xp too, maybe you could direct me on my keyboard...

e.g.

WINDOWS BUTTON>UP (x3)>RIGHT>ENTER>TAB (x2)>TYPE 'xxxx'

just an idea?

i have connected my sisters laptop up to my LCD TV via the same VGA cable and this works. So the cable (albeit temperamental) works fine.

Thanks again matey.

It stops loading the safe mode ?codes? on the line ending in .MUP/sys

i just tried changing my video adapter option in the boot setup. no luck still.

aha it doesnt seem you can see in safe mode. You need a Copy of XP and need to repair the system. Or if you are in a clear mood you can download a copy of ubuntu (Ubuntu homepage | Ubuntu) and burn it onto a CD. reboot your computer with the CD in the computer and get it to boot of the CD by changing your BIOS settings or what it says on the First screen at the bottom of the screen for example boot sequence . Then click the first open on the ubuntu CD like "try ubuntu off CD" and see if your computer screen still works when it is fully loaded. This will help you get any files you want off the PC intill u repair it and you can use it as a full system but CANT INSTALL ANY PROGRAMMES

well first it will tell us if the problem is with the OS. Yes get all your files on a usb pen if it works ok then you will need to see if your Hp has a recovery mode on when u boot up. My friends had it on the bottom of hes screen when he first turn on his computer like F something for recovery mode where i think it will do a reinstall where the computer is back to factory settings like you first got your computer like.

this guy has the exact same problem as me. before i do a factory reset. what does he suggest? because i have too many files on my pc to save all to USB. Look at what that pdl756 guy says...

iv had a look at it and he does have a vaild point but this is for a computer that you cant see anything including the BIOS. Id try and wire your VGA into the motherborads port if it isnt already and power up to see if you get any diffence. if not i think that it would be easier to do a factory reset . If you dont have enought room on a USB stick see if you can save your work on to your sisters laptop.

by BIOS do you mean the start up screen? the one with the windows logo like? because i can see that. just beyond that blue bar wiggling left to right it goes blank.

how would i wire it into the motherboards port? sorry if i lack the knowledge lol

how is your VGA cavle wired into your computer??? and no the BIOS screen is the first screen that you go onto and its the one that has the F somthing to recover your pc. That fix is for you have more than one VGA port on your computer.

i think i may no a way if you have a XP CD at your house. You can make a live OS of windows and then you can do a system restore and hopefully you can see again :D

what you need is this program and a windows XP CD and a other computer that is windows to run the program to create the CD

The software that i used to create it is PE Builder again this is a free program Bart's Preinstalled Environment (BartPE) bootable live windows CD/DVD

hope this helps

is there a way i can download a graphics/display adapter on my sister laptop, to put onto a USB stick or something the maybe install it on my pc from the setup or boot options?

Posted

i dont know anyways that you can do that mate . If i was in your position i would use the Ubuntu Cd and get everything you want off the system and to the HP recovery or take it to a IT repair shop

Am I correct in assuming that running with the Ubuntu disk, the screen is fully active and you can see everything, the Ubuntu system loads OK and it all goes OK from there?

If that is so then there is nothing wrong with the graphics system, from what you are saying I think you are already running graphics from the inbuilt mother board and not a separate graphics card, the VGA socket on a graphics card would be no where near the USB ports and on a slot to one side or underneath everything else. (depends on case design)

That said, it does now seem to be an operating system fault, and possibly the part that controls the graphics from within Windows itself. To deal with that an operating system repair is the only option, especially if you want to retain all your data, and this can only be done with a Microsoft issue of Windows XP disk. If one cannot be borrowed, then I recommend taking in to a reputable repair shop, they should have the facilities to do a repair and if that is all that is needed it will not be too expensive.
