I have just got a new pc and i am trying to transfer all my files from my old pc to my new pc. I have bought a pc-pc ethernet cable but i can't seem to get the pc's to talk to each other. i can find the old pc on my a new pc (and vice verca) but they won't seem to connect. When it asks me for the password for my old pc it just doesn't connect. Any ideas?

I assume that your new PB is Windows 7 and I confess to a lack of knowledge of the intricacies of transferring files between the two OSs using ethernet cables. But I do know that you will have to establish a working network.

 

That being said, the easiest, safest and smartest way to transfer is to copy all of your important data to an external medium such as an external Hard Drive (Also make a copy to a DVD ) and simply copy them to the new PC. That way you have all your files in at least 3 places. (The old PC, The External Drilve and the New PC.) Having another permanent copy on a DVD will insure against any or all of these devices going bad.

You could also use a USB to USB data transfer cable Windows 7 will recognise this the other pc will need software which is usually supplied

That being a crossover cable?

 

You will need to set the IP and subnet mask manually on both computers as without a connection between the two computers through a router (and specifically DHCP), none will be present.

 

Hook them both up through a router, even a borrowed router not connected to the Internet will do it, share the folders you want to copy and it will work just great.
