if you can boot up the PC i would make it run a Diskcheck

In Xp go to start, run and then type chkdsk.

This will then run in command line.

If you have tried another HDD and that isnt working it could be a problem with your RAM. Have you been inside your computer and upgraded the RAM???

Does it go into Standby if you leave it or are you working away while it stands by?

If it's the former then I would check your power options in Control Panel and disable Standby.

If the latter then check the event logs and update all your drivers.

It could be a hardware issue and the best way to fix this is back up all your data and reinstall windows with no applications. Then one by one put your drivers back on (process of elimination).

I am working on it and it stands by or cuts out

I looked in Control Pane power settings and it was set to Hibernate after 20'm

stand by was not set

so I disabled Hibernate. is this 0k?

Disabling "Hibernate" is OK.

Start > Right Click "My Computer" > Properties > Advanced

Under "Startup & Recovery" click Settings.

Clear the box that says "Automatically Restart". > OK

Next time it crashes you may get an error message.

If this is the case copy the exact message and post it here.

It will give a hint as to the cause.

Does it shut down if you use Safe Mode?

Switch on and constantly tap f8. ( about once per second ) > Click on Safe Mode from the list of options.

Does not shut down in safe Mode

but HALF the programs ant running

in safe Mode.

Thats what SAFE mode is for, it starts the PC/Laptop with the minimal drivers (this is mainly for trouble shooting)

As its not shutting down in safe mode, it means that something other than the bare windows OS is causing you problems.

What was the very last thing you did before the PC stopped working properly, updated any drivers? installed any new hardware? installed new software?

from safe mode you can choose to 'roll back' using system restore to a previous point in time, my experience of system restore is biased as I think its poo IMHO and you will be very lucky if it works at all, but you can give it a go :D)

"The very last thing you did before the PC stopped working properly,

would just be normal windows updates from Automatic updates,

its getting more frequent as time go's on. I Have disconnected all hardware LIKE PRINTER CD'Rom

GRAPHICS CARD and swapped RAM but still it crashes.

Could this be a motherboard problem and if so would it be worth getting it fixed as PC is 4 year's old

It depends on what you want to do in all honesty (there is nothing worse than waiting on say a forum for people to chip in and try and help you, while this is great it takes time and patience from you) and how much money you want to spend.

I don't mean to seem inpatient is just I need my PC for work, when I say it is getting more frequent as time go's on .I just mean that it is getting worse . I would be prepared to spend money to get it fixed if it is not more than the pc is worth it is a old PC 4 years lol. to some one over than me ant worth much maybe £80-£100 so I would pay £40-£50 if that would do the job but any more than that I would buy a new PC. But I have no clue as to what the cost would be if I just had it looked at by a pro.

Thanks for all your help

Did you try a system restore from safe mode?

As it's not shutting down in safe mode, it points to software as opposed to a hardware fault, you could trouble shoot from within safe mode, such as removing GPU drivers and sound drivers etc (so at the moment it wont cost you anything but time :))

Worst case scenario would be reloading the OS again, do you have an OS (operating system)disk?
