Another Licensing Question......

We have an SBS2003 domain and upgraded a 2000 Terminal Server to 2003. We

needed to add some licenses since we no longer had the "free' ones for XP

users. The original group of CALS were per device. The CALS I bought to add

were per user. After installing the new per user CALS the Terminal Server

Licensing console shows "Not Applicable" under the issued column. I take it

you can not have both versions of CALS on the same license server?? Where do

we go from here?

In Windows 2003, your Per User licenses are listed as "Not Applicable"

because Per User licenses are unmanaged in Server 2003, as documented in

KB822134, and won't be issued at all.

You will need to monitor your licenses manually.

Yes it is true, you're not possible to install per user and per device

modes on the same license server. Decide what licensing mode you will use

and configure server for that, if you have one user connecting from

multiple devices choose per user, if you have one device and multiple users

on it choose per device.

It's perfectly possible to install both Per User and Per Device TS

CALs on the same TS Licensing Server!

 

It's not possible to configure a Terminal Server to use more than

one licensing mode at the same time. But you can have different

Terminal Servers, using different licensing modes, connecting to

the same TS Licensing Server.

You are even allowed to use both Per User and Per Device TS CALs on

a single TS. This is documented in the same KB article that you

refer to:

 

"To use both User and Device TS CALs simultaneously on the same

terminal server, the server must be configured for Per User TS CAL

mode."

 

But the manual administration of the TS CALs becomes rather

complicated. So it's a good idea, but not a requirement, to use a

single type of licenses on each Terminal Server.

A follow-up question: We were out of device CALS and the temporary CALS are

expiring soon. As I said, I added 5 user CALS. I've now changed the Terminal

Server to use the user CALS. Will the machines that've pulled a temoprary

device CAL be able to connect to the server after the expiration of the

device CAL since the server is now using user CALS??

Yes. Machines will be able to connect to TS (Per User Mode) even if they

have TS Per Device expired CALs.
