Terminal Services Printing

I have a TS environment connected to a WAN. When logging in from another

LAN environment with Networked Printers, the default printers are not seen

within the Printers and Faxes window while other networked printers are

visible. In another instance within the same WAN shared printers are not

seen within the Printers and Faxes window.

I've read that TS shares locally attached printers, but that is not what I

am seeing with the networked printers.

Is there a way I can install the networked or shared printers on the

terminal server so the user can choose which printer they will use? The

shared printers are attcahed to static IP PCs.

Thanks in advance.

Try installing the printer driver on the TS.

Are there any messages in the Event Log?

What exactly do you mean by "networked printers?"

Do you actually mean remote printers?

Ah. May be a couple different issues.

Take a look at the Event Log and you may see some errors.

Please list the specific printers that are not showing up.

Thanks for the info. The event log shows it is missing the PCL 6 driver

for a couple of HP 4050 network attached printers.

Other printers include an Epson Photo R380 (USB), a Lexmark E232 and

E321, Brother MFC 440 CN and 420 CN.

Whenever I've tried to install the printers, the setup needs the

printers attached to the server, is there a way to install just the

drivers so the server will recognize the printers when a user logs on?

Thanks

Others have different ways of adding printer drivers to the system,

but this is what I do;

1. "Add a Printer" -> Local -> LPT1

2. When you select a printer from the list click "Windows Update"

This should go out and grab the latest printer drivers.

3. If the driver in the list matches the driver in the Event Log,

add the printer.

4. It will take a few minutes and it will add the printer.

5. Delete the printer and now the driver is added.

You can also go to http://catalog.update.microsoft.com to see

if there is a driver for you printer.

Another option is http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=239088

and use the TS Printer Redirection Tool.

You may be SOL on some of the printers, but I would suggest they

purchase a printer that uses PCL5 or PCL6, that way in the event

a driver does not match you can default a PCL printer to a

generic HP LaserJet PCL driver.

Either way, I would try to use the above steps or a third party

printing solution before adding manufacturer print drivers to the

TS server.

Re: Terminal Services Printing

Terminal Services doesn't redirect network printers by default.

Only local attached client printers are redirected within a terminal server

session.

You can change this behaviour by editing the registry on the clients.

See the needed steps below:

1. Click Start, Run, type regedit, and then click OK.

2. Locate and then click the following key in the registry:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Terminal Server

Client\Default\AddIns\RDPDR

3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.

4. Type FilterQueueType, and then press ENTER.

5. On the Edit menu, click Modify.

6. Type FFFFFFFF, and then click OK.

Re: Terminal Services Printing

Or: update the rdp client to at least version 5.2.xxx (which came

with 2003 SP2, located in on a 2003 server in C:\WINDOWS\system32

\clients\tsclient\win32\msrdpcli.msi), which redirects both local

and network printers by default.
