Computer Model: Inspiron 530S

Manufacturer: Dell

Operating System: Windows Vista Home Premium

 

I am having a problem with my wireless internet connection. When I start the computer, it works fine, the connection is good. Sometimes the connection will suddenly cut out. This might happen after a few minutes or several hours. I still seem to be connected to the wireless router, but not to the internet. When I attempt to diagnose through the network connection program that came with the OP, I get the following message:

 

""Windows has confirmed that 'Primary DNS Server' is currently online, but is not responding to connection attempts at this time. This usually means a firewall is running between the two computers and is blocking 'domain'. Windows firewall is configured to allow this connection. A remote firewall may be blocking the connection.

 

The following policy may need to be adjusted:

Policy Provider: Symantec IPS Provider

Filter Name: Symantec Outbound Connect V4 Callout""

 

If I remove the wireless adaptor and replace, I get the following message:

 

""There may be a problem with one or more network adaptors on this computer.""

 

If I turn off the modem and the wireless adaptor, then plug them both back in, I get either the same message or this one:

 

""A problem with your network router or broadband modem might be preventing an internet connection.""

 

Either way, I seem to be able to connect to the wireless router, but not to the internet. The only thing that solves this problem is restarting my computer.

 

My wireless adaptor is an Edimax Wireless LAN (I think). It has Sweex written on the side. The router/modem is a Sky broadband netgear.

It's your Symantec security blocking it. Have you configured Symantec firewall to allow the connections?

I think Symantec makes Norton Antivirus, which I currently have installed on my computer.

I've been playing around with it for 20 mins, but I havent found anything like a Symantec IPS providy policy. I dont even know what that means.

Uninstall Norton, its absolutely (not allowed to swear) :D

Get something free like Avast or Avira and see if it solves the problem, Symantec (Norton) software has a tendancy to 'lurk' around after you install it. So go to symantecs website and use their uninstaller

Thanks, I'll do that. I cant really check if it works though, since the connection cuts out randomly and sometimes it doesnt happen for days.

I have to agree with Dalo. Uninstall it and see what happens. I had a trial version of Norton and it constantly caused connection problems. Most notably after updating. Once I uninstalled it I had no more problems.

 

Like Dalo also said you might want to get the uninstaller. Also copy your Norton key if for some reason you want to reinstall it. You will be advised by Norton to do that should you go to their site to get the uninstaller.

Already run the uninstaller, and removed any traces of nortton and symantec from my computer. Since symantec seemed to be causing the connection problems, that should fix it.

 

I checked somewhere else about this, and apparently the disconnect maght be caused by IP number switching, and that I could reserve one, or something. I don't have the foggiest idea what that means though...

 

Since I've got rid of Nortton, I guess I'll need a new antivirus software. I know I can download them for free (the only reason I had nortton was because my parents installed it), but does anyone have any suggestions as to which particular one?

If your looking for a free one you can use:-

Avast

Avira

or MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) this one would be my personal choice.

Quickly, Norton IPS stands for “Norton Intrusion Prevention System”.

And the problem you are describing seems to be related to one feature the “Network Security Map”.

It is good to launch this feature. And you can find this feature on the Norton Interface under “Network”.
