Guest Anteaus Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 RE: Setup DNS server DNS is a complex subject and you'll need to burn some midnight oil if you want to understand it fully. Basically, if you just want to provide a 'forwarding' DNS service for your LAN computers, this will in most cases work anyway without any special settings. This happens because (in the absence of other instructions) your server will contact the root-authority DNS servers for info. If you do create a 'zone' -as the entry for a domain is termed- then this will affect the info returned for this domain, but (since it 's not the Authoritative nameserver for the domain) will only apply to users of this internal DNS server. Thus you should NOT create a zone for your internet/website/email domain, that is unless you want to influence how your internal computers will see that domain. If you want to have a domain for the naming of internal computers, then use a subdomain, for example lan.domain.com or else use a non-internet naming system, e.g. domain.local -- "KellyWayper@gmail.com" wrote: > Hi > I setup up my first DNS server, when I look at dnsmgmt, under Froward > lookup Zones -> domain.com > I cant see any folders under it, it suppose to have ftp, > tcp....folders under it > I think I didnt setup my DNS properly, but I can still use the > internet, can anyone tell me whats wrong with my DNS? > > thanks >
