G'day everyone,

A few days ago I went to startup up my pc and "analog power save mode" appeared on the monitor. I pulled out the graphics card which is a Nvidia GeForce 7600GS 3D 512 MB PCI Express, blew out all the dust and reseated it, to which the same thing still happened. Having no idea when it come to computer hardware I went out and bought a Nvidia 8800GTS card to see if it would work and it didnt, still came up with "analog power save mode". I switched over to the onboard graphics and no problem. My pc is a Compaq Presario. I'd greatly appreciate any insight as to what is going on.

Cheers.

Its not related to the GPU.

Do you have an older analog monitor? have you tried disabling the power save modes from within windows?

So you dont have a CRT monitor?

Did you install the latest Nvidia drivers for the new/older cards?

The only monitor I have is a LG Flatron W1942T. Yes I tried both cards, with the llatest drivers for each of them. Edited by Jimbo30

Well if you are using the DVI cable with the add in cards, And disabling the BIOS onboard graphics (which is being saved by the BIOS)

Not having VGA and DVI cables plugged in (VGA into onboard and DVI into add in card) then there is not much else it can be

I'm only using vga, which plugs into a little adapter (no idea what its called) which allows it to be plugged into the add in card.

When you say you "switched over to onboard graphics", what do you mean? Is it that you moved the monitor cable from the add in over to onboard, is it that you went back in to the BIOS and swapped a setting to enable to onboard graphics?

Also, you say that onboard graphics works ok, but.......does it work ok or is it running in VGA mode, ie 640 x 480? If it runs ok, in the correct mode that would indicate you have the drivers installed, and that being true you could have the nVidia drivers installed as well. See where I am going?

And..... is the onboard video a DVI or VGA connector, as both are common now?

So, here's my thoughts, if you have the onboard video drivers installed, uninstall them, also uninstall the nvidia drivers and delete the unpack folder in C: drive. Shutdown the PC. Unplug from the mains and remove the BIOS battery for 30s. Refit battery.

You should be able to fit the new card and the BIOS auto sense it is there, and so you can plug straight into the new card and boot. Go into the BIOS, check your settings for boot drive etc if you need to, disable onboard video, reboot.

If it still won't run, I'd say that either the board has gone faulty (doubtful though), or if you use one, your DVI to VGA adapter is faulty

I move the monitor cable from the add in to the onboard. I changed nothing in the bios.

When I booted up with the monitor cable connected to the onboard it started off in 640 x 480 but I changed it to 1400 x 900 which is what it is in now.

The onboard is a VGA connector.

I'll try as suggested and see what happens.

Cheers.

If anyone has changed options in your BIOS or Overclocked the system, when you pull the CMOS battery all the info stored will be lost (make sure you save any settings)

If you have always ran onboard and recently bought the 7600GS then yes, it could be an issue with something, but from the sounds of it you have been using the 7600GS without problems until recently.

SO something must have changed between it being fine and it now not being.

I pulled out the cmos battery, waited 30s put it back in went to boot up and nothing. All I get now is the compaq screen and it stays on that, also, I have no use of the keyboard, num lock caps lock and scroll lock light blink twice then nothing.

The 7600GS came already in the pc and I have had no problems with it until now.

By the way I had to dig out an old pc to post this.

When you see the Compaq screen you need to keep tapping whatever the key was to get into the BIOS normally DEL or an F key.

Just to try to help master Dalo, with Compaq tapping the F10 key is usually the correct key.
