My BIOS battery went dead. When I replaced the battery and started my

computer, it only registered 16 MB of RAM. I have 64 MB RAM on 2 - 32 banks

and 2 empty slots. It is an older HP Platinum 40 with W95 whicjh I had

upgraded to W98SE2. I can't find anyway to get it to register the 64 MB RAM.

I tried MS Cong and F1 setup to no avail.

Is there another reference somewhere in BIOS setup to a 16Mb memory limit or

boundary, or some mention of an option to enable or disable a memory hole or

gap at 16Mb?

No where that I can find. f1 setup shows the memory at 16, but it's "blue"

and I can not access it to change it there. in MS Config, advance, - "limit

memory to" is checked and has 16. I tried unchecking it, and I tried

increasing the memory to 64 but to no avail

Unless your bios sees the full 64 megs, there is no point in trying to get

windows to detect it.

My guess is that you simply loosened the RAM when you went in there and

changed the cmos battery.

With the power cord disconnected,

open the case, remove, then reseat the RAM.

then make sure the bios detects the full amount

I did that. I pulled both and reinstalled them to no avail. I thought about

switching them into slots 3 & 4 but I wasn't sure if that would do any harm.

Another thing that baffles me... Why does it show 16 when I only have two 32

MB sticks? Why not 32?

Well...the RAM may have gotten "zapped" by static when you opened the case

and possibly made contact with the RAM.

If even one stick of RAM has been damaged, you may see some small odd amount

..

 

If you have any spare ram sticks give them a try...

be sure to use caution

Try removing the RAM again and be sure the contacts are clean.

be sure to take caution for static discharge.

the contacts can be cleaned with a pencil eraser, the be sure to wipe off

any residue.

look in the machine and blow any dust from the slots...

then reseat the RAM or possibly try the other two slots.

 

If you cannot get the full 64 megs detected...

if you have a computer repair shop in town...they may be kind enough to just

give you some replacement sticks

or sell them at a low price.

A few 32 megs sticks should not cost much

Go into the AMI BIOS Setup utility.

Copy down your current bios setup so you can put it all back if this

does not work.

 

To set your PC to its default values, Select:

AUTO CONFIGURATION WITH BIOS DEFAULTS

Yes, but to no avail. I'm begining to think the memory went bad. I'm really

careful to discharge any static before I go inside, but.... ?

How do I get into the AMI BIOS set up? F1 setup won't allow me into the BIOS

settings. But F1 is where I reset the default settings, and I thought that

would reset BIOS too.

I believe AMI used the delete key to get into the bios setup.

I have an old AMI bios manual here. In this version, it does not auto

detect external memory size. You have to enter the bios and change the

memory size when you add memory cards.

 

When you pulled the battery, you lost any customizing done to your

bios settings.

That "Limit Memory To ?" setting is the one that's causing the problem. You

need to get it unchecked somehow. If you can find a manual for BIOS setup

it may explain why it's checked and set to 16, and how to clear it.

Though I agree that *if *the bios has a 16 meg RAM limit setting...that

would be the solution...

There appears to be no such uption. I'd of course have another look in the

bios at *all* options.

 

The OP mentioned that he observed that option in msconfig...

which of course is only going to list what the BIOS detects

Double-check the memory modules to make sure they are really 32

megabytes. Please note that 32 bit is not the same thing as 32 megabytes.

Also, the 16 megabytes you are seeing may be built into the motherboard.

To see if this is the case, try booting the computer without the modules.

I would be surprised if the memory went bad. You really need to get into the

BIOS and set it up, I believe.

If you have your BIOS version and your model number of your PC, the info on

how to do this is should be available.

One question though, was this computer not in use for years and then when

you tried it, you found the MB battery dead?

When you get if fixed, please post back.
