mij Posted August 7, 2010 Posted August 7, 2010 I don't know what I've done but in re-installing vista I now am faced with a choice when the computer boots up. How can I tell which is the second one (it's not needed) and then get rid? cheers jim Quote
aFixedPC Posted August 8, 2010 Posted August 8, 2010 The second one will be the previous installation and probably will be under C:\Windows.old. In there will be items such as your Desktop, Favourites and application settings. I would leave it there until you are sure you have everything. To get rid of the menu option (which doesn't get rid of the Windows installation), download Vistabootpro: - Windows 7 Boot Editor - Dual Boot Windows 7 or Vista with Windows XP Quote
RandyL Posted August 8, 2010 Posted August 8, 2010 Dual Boot is not free. I think there might be better options. I like free. :) I don't know how you reinstalled but like afixedPC said it does seem that you have created a dual boot when what you wanted was a clean install. If it were me I would look up the FAQs for your computer and perform a clean install from scratch in order to get it right and avoid issues in the future. I think that might be what you have in mind. Do you know the make, model and number of your PC? Do you have any disks? I've never set up a dual boot so I can't help with that I'm afraid. Others on our forum have however. Therefore I will leave it to those that know. Quote We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. DSTM Posted August 8, 2010 Posted August 8, 2010 Try this. Go to “Start” and “Run”. Type in “e:\boot\bootsect.exe /nt52 ALL /force” (without quotes, and replacing e: with the drive letter of your Vista DVD). Restart the computer, the boot selection menu should be gone. Yes I did want a clean install and I got that I think the first time .... but you know what it's like sitting here twiddling thumbs and ..... mouse clicking  Anyway you can get Vistabootpro free. Just google it and the read the offers as you type. A vistabootpro.exe was offered free (yes our favourite price) so I downloaded and it worked ... well the boot screen flashed for a few milliseconds and was gone. That's sufficient to satisify my wife. I tried the alternative offering and it looked like it was going to re-install so I reversed out of there - but will remember for the next time. Yes there will be a next time   many thanks cheers jim Quote
mij Posted August 8, 2010 Author Posted August 8, 2010 choice of vista on start up Yes there will be a next time   Well I didn't think it was going to be this quick .... I'm now getting NTLDR is missing press con-alt-del to restart But of course it wont go past that ... ooops what have I done? cheers jim Quote
DSTM Posted August 8, 2010 Posted August 8, 2010 You are in deep **** Try This you`ll need to restore it from xp cd get into recovery console from the cd, and after entering requested info, write this: copy E:\i386\ntldr C:\ntldr just replace E with the cd-rom drive letter and C with the windows partition drive letter press enter restart further Help. Windows may not start and you may receive an "NTLDR is missing" error message if Windows is not up-to-date and there are too many files in the root folder Quote Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.
mij Posted August 8, 2010 Author Posted August 8, 2010 choice of vista on start up You are in deep **** And don't I know it  Try This QUOTE] Well my try didn't work but I probably didn't know enough to do it correctly. So I did what I do know - another re-install. Well it has worked and is now back online - thanks be! It has been another learning curve, the trouble is I'll forget it all by the time I need it again - or M'suir Gates will change the system some more. many thanks cheers jim Quote
