Hi

I had changed the admin password on my acer 5235 extensa laptop..which I then stupidly forgotten! I could still access everything via the other user account, so continued to use the internet. It started to run really slow..so I took it into a pc shop, where he set both passwords as blank, and told me my laptop was fine, he did a speedtest which showed an excellent speed. I got it home..was able to access admin account again..however it was still sticking and running even slower than dialup! I ran a speedtest..and again it was fine, I contacted my broadband provider who said there was no connection problem.

I have microsoft security essentials and have done full scan which is all fine.

I ran the free regcure scan which said there were nearly 80 errors, however I have been a little weary to pay for this as Im really unsure of the problem :(

Im just wondering..if I use sytem restore, will it help me? also would it restore my login passwords..as i forgotten it..and after paying the pc man £25 to create blank ones am in fear of doing anything to cause this problem.

If anybody can advise me I would be so grateful x

First of all do not pay any of these registry optimizers, they will always show registry errors and rarely fix anything but often make things worse.

I do not think that a system restore will effect the passwords but to be honest I am not all that sure so I would wait on that.

What is your expected broadband speed and what is speedtest showing? If it is as expected my guess is that you either it is in your browser settings, a firewall setting or malware. Is your computer functioning properly other than the internet?

My guess (and it is only a guess) is malware. What security programs do you have?

Hi, thanks for your reply :)

Everything else is working fine eg non internet programmes, on lappy.

I think my broadband speed should be 8, and Im getting upto 12 on the tests. I can download really quickly..that is..if and when the page decides to actually load! Reading through emails is a nightmare, it took me nearly 30mins to click open and delete just 10 mails earlier :(

The only security I have is microsoft security essentials which came loaded with the laptop.

What is malware (sorry Im a little rusty!) and would my anti virus have picked this up as I did a full scan last night and nothing was found, apart from the registry errors ( I used the windows live scanner this morning which found this..it did propmt me to system restore but I unchecked the box as I wasn't sure if it would take the system back to my old password state)

I wish I knew what to do, very frustrating indeed.

System Restore will not affect the new password. Also System Restore can be undone unless you do it in safemode.

You don't say what browser you are using but if it's Internet Explorer try using Firefox as a test or try How to Reset or Restore Advanced Settings in Internet Explorer 7 The same steps work in Internet Explorer 8. Reset will rid you of any toolbars.

I've seen add-ons like toolbars slow IE.

malware is viruses, trojans, rootkits, adware, spyware etc.

Hi Randy, thanks for your reply :)

I have reset both browsers ( I use firefox and IE8 ) to no avail..still the same.

I am going to try my friends laptop running off my broadband tomorrow to see if this is a connection problem.

I don't have an installation disc as my laptop came preloaded with windows 7, do you think I should re install it completely if I can get a disc from comet (where I purchased)?

I will post the result of trying friends lappy tomorrow..

also.. I was on the phone today with talktalk ( net provider) and they took me through all of the checks and reset router etc .. and all seems fine at their end. speedtest showed a fast speed also once again. Plus my anti virus was all clear on the scan..

Seems like you want a fix for the lovely Talktalk ISP problems - change ISP is my advice.

No doubt you will be contracted and may be stuck for a while......if you can see that your download speed is as fast as it should be, but webpages are not loading as they should, it may be a DNS issue.

Have Talktalk checked your DNS settings?

Also, have they supplied a router to you, and have you (or Talktalk) checked the MTU?
