Questions: Upgrading to 2003 x64 R2 for FSRM

We have a File server running Server 2003 Std x64 Edition SP1 (this is the

front end server where the actual data is on a SAN) and are considering to

upgrade it to R2 to take advantage of the FSRM (File Server Resource

Manager). So, this is a two part question post.

1. Are there any issues that others have encountered when upgrading from

2003 (if possible the version I mention above) to R2? What are the pitfalls

to watch out for? Do any of the other new features of R2 cause issues for

pre-existing 2003 SP1 deployed file servers? We are only really interested

in the FSRM functionality of R2.

We have the following apps installed: Symantec Antivirus Win64 CE, EMC

Replication Manager, Symantec Backup Exec Remote Agent,

2. I am currently using an application called SpaceOBserver

(http://www.jam-software.com/spaceobserver/) to generate reports on

duplicate files and overall disk usage. It does the job reasonably well but

leaves a lot to be desired. FSRM, from what I have read

appears to have most of the features we are looking for (comprehensive

reporting, hard/soft quotas, email notification, file screening).

Appreciate any advice or feedback on upgrading to R2 and experiences with

FSRM. Thanks very much.

Hey Barkley,

R2 doesn't change any existing system files, so it should do minimum damage.

(for question 1). But if you are worreid that it willl give you issue, I

suggest that you do a clone of that machine, upgrade and do a test before

you upgrade R2 on your production machine.

For question 2, please note that the auditing of quotas/templates using the

GUI could be painfully slow, and there's a limit of 3000 (got to recheck the

exact limit) files for the report. Eg, if you run a report to show the

folder which has ran out of quota, and if there's > 3000 folders, then the

report will not be accurate, since it can only show 3000 folders.
