I got the above message when I tried to go online with my computer this morning. It seems that removing 'recipe bar' from explorer had something to do with it if the messages were anything to go by. That was something I un-installed yesterday - quite feasible as we are both trying to shed the pounds. I don't remember downloading it though.

So far I have spent 40 minutes with the BE THERE technical help-concluded that it needed a new driver on the wireless network card. The computer connects to the net via other unsecured routers and to this one when un-secured. It wont connect with either wep or wpa encryption.

I have tried downloading a driver but so far that has been unsuccessful.

This system is much like my wife's except that it's HP not a Dell.

Vista 64bit

Fire-fox browser and I have deleted the Int Ex 8 update.

Could I prove the point by say switching off this computer and resetting the gateway on the Dell whose wireless isn't corrupted?

We do have a laptop down stairs operational ATM as well but that can be switched off.

cheers

I have tried to re-install Int Explorer but it says a more recent version is already on the computer but 'search' doesn't find it. Where might it be?

Hi Jim.Does Device Manager give you any clues?

Remove old Drivers before installing latest.

Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.

IntExp corrupted

I had removed it completely (I thought)

I restored to a previous date when Int Exp was ok but it still would not pass the point where a WEP or a WPA number was needed.

Three visits to the BE THERE techies got me back online but without the WEP or WPA.

So we are up and running so to speak, but not as I'd like. I don't know what the answer is.

Cheers

I have a real concern here if I am reading this right. It seems to me that whoever you were dealing with got you up and running by eliminating yourrouter's security. My guess is that you now have a totally unsecured wireless network which will allow anyone within a short distance to access your network. When you show your networks using the little single monitor icon in the XP system tray does it show as a secured network? Is it still named the same as it was?

I'm suscribed to this thread and had an email indicating there was reply but when I get here it's not visible.

Wossup? Is sumpin broke?

And then answer is yes! This is an unsecured connection.

The last posted reply was mine at 10:48 my time. Yours shows as 12:08. There does not seem to be anything in between the two.

If it shows as unsecured on your computer it will be unsecured on the others as well. The problem may lie with the wireless card in the computer that has been causing you problems or with the router itself. If the others were working with the security enabled then the problem seems to be with the one PC. You need to be able to have a secured network and that may mean resetting the whole network which may or may not solve the problem you have been having on this one machine.

Hmmm, the last two posts are not now visible on this computer. I presume they will do so when I 'submit' this post.

Ok, to check this out I have a wireless card on another 'puter that isn't being used in another room. Should I be able swap the cards with out compromising this online connection?

If it is wireless card at fault should I then be able to set up the WEP or WPA security thingy?

cheers

jim

PS The techies were of the mind that it was my computer at fault.

I am really not a hardware expert at all but I do not see how it can hurt to try. I would first make sure that it is connecting to the unsecured network. That would at least indicate that the card is compatible etc. You will then have to reset security in your router and make sure that they key (WEP etc.) works. Keep in mind that you will need the key when you first try to log on after it is in your router.

WPA2, I believe, is the most secure but not all computers and cards are capable if they are to old. But, again that is coming from an admitted non hardware expert. :)

The post preceding this that I can see is mine timed at 04.21pm today.... I wonder what that's due to?

Ok I'll take out the card from the other computer. I'll check that it connects first though as that was the computer used to set this up this network originally - IIRC

Definitly something wrong here - not showing/posting here now. I tried posting to say that all is well and this shows a secure connection on the other computer but it wouln't accept it. It would not post!

Well I go to the foot of our stairs!

It posted that one but I expected three of the previous posts because that was the number of times I clicked before I came away and deleted that short-cut.

Anyway, all I was trying to say was that I am now sorted, thanks for your time and help.

cheers

PS Yeah! It posted that and I saw it before I left. Quit whilst ahead I hear someone mutter.

internet explorer is corrupted

I got an email saying the kayv had replied in this thread. When I followed up and looked there was nowt here....

Anyway the problem has been resolved by the BE Technical service using a WPA security code. Yeah I realise it's limitations but it's the best available ATM.

The message was removed as it was a spam message.
