Server 2008 Folder Redirection

Hello,

I have configured folder redirection on my server for Documents, Downloads,

Videos, Music and Pictures within an OU which contains all the users.

However, when logging on to client machines (all running Vista) none of

these folders get redirected. When trying to manually change the location of

these folders to a shared directory on the server

(\\Server\Users\%Username%\Documents) I get an access denied error message,

even though the users have full control to their directory.

Now, the interesting part is that if I manually change the location using

the IP address of the server (\\10.0.0.12\Users\%Username%\Documents) it

works fine, which pretty much means it's not a security issue.

I can ping the server by its name, browse the shared folders by its name,

rdp to it by its name, so it's also not a name resolution issue.

I have tried disabling the firewall on the server but that makes no

difference.

Any suggestions?

Thanks/...

Hello Andy,

Please post an unedited ipconfig /all from the client and the server.

Re: Server 2008 Folder Redirection

Even more interesting:

The default location is C:\Users\%Username%\Pictures. If I try to change to

\\Server\Users\%Username%\Pictures I get access denied error messages.

However, if I add a character on the end -

\\Server\Users\%Username%\Pictures1 - it works. This is the same for all the

folders I want redirected!

Very odd!

Re: Server 2008 Folder Redirection

It also works if I use the FQDN of the server:

\\Server.lan.ok-home.co.uk\Users\%Username%\Pictures

So it could be a NetBIOS issue!

Re: Server 2008 Folder Redirection

I also get access denied error messages if I try to create new folders within

my user area on the server for any of the 'system' folders (Documents,

Pictures etc) but I can create new folders that don't use these names

(Documents1, Pictures1 etc).

This is really annoying!

Re: Server 2008 Folder Redirection

Hello Andy,

If you not use IPv6 uncheck it. Also configure the real ipaddress from the

DNS server and do not use the loopback address 127.0.0.1 And if you have

unused network adapters just disable them.

Did you run dcdiag and netdiag on the server to check for errors?

Best regards

Re: Server 2008 Folder Redirection

I have always been told to use 127.0.0.1 as the primary DNS server if the

server itself is a DNS server as it will then look at itself for DNS

resolution as opposed to hitting the DNS service.

Re: Server 2008 Folder Redirection

Hello Andy,

Ofcourse you can use it, but the problems maybe start if you use more then

one DNS server and you forget that you have set the loopback ip. It is not

wrong but the better solution is always to use the real ip address.

Re: Server 2008 Folder Redirection

Thanks for all your help so far Meinolf. I have disabled IPv6 but i'm still

having the access denied problem if I use the NetBIOS name of the server. I

have temporarily configured Group Policy to redirect those folders using IP

address (which is working fine), but would like to get this sorted.

Below is the output from dcdiag. netdiag isn't a recognized command on my

2008 box..

Re: Server 2008 Folder Redirection

Hello Andy,

Netdiag you can use from 2003, just extract it from the support.cab and copy

it to c:windows\system32

Re: Server 2008 Folder Redirection

Might be on to something here - if I disable Caching of the share on the

server it allows me to use \\Server in the redirection path. Likewise if I

disable Offline Files on the client, it also works.

Kind of suggests it's 99.9% Offline Files and/or Caching on the server!

Now how to fix it..?
