peeboy Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 Hi, I'm trying to give my friend access to our Wireless service. Whenever I've done this on any other laptop before, it's been really easy and automatically finds the router. My friends laptop finds the router and when looking at the status it seems to be talking to the router, but does not connect to the internet. The message returned is 'Cannot Communicate with Primary DNS Server(192.168.2.1)'. I've tried lots of different things, looked at all the settings, re-started the router and still get this message. There is never any problem with the other 3 laptops we use at home. Can anyone help ? Operating System is Widows Vista. It's driving me nuts!!!! Many thanks, peeboy :o) Quote

peeboy Posted August 16, 2010 Author Posted August 16, 2010 Hi, I tried what you suggested and still hasn't resolved anything. Would you or anyone, have any other advice ? Thanks, peeboy Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 My only advice is to either post in one forum or at least advise the people who are trying to help you as to what you have already tried. Please note that your very first post contains a link to another forum. That is your right (to post in more than one place) and nobody is complaining about that. But when you do, you have to at least update the folks who are helping you. Otherwise they may be just wasting their own time and yours. Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
peeboy Posted August 16, 2010 Author Posted August 16, 2010 Hi, Another user has also told me to: Go into CONTROL PANEL. Click on NETWORK CONNECTIONS. You should see a WIRELESS NETWORK CONNECTION in there. Right-Click on it and click PROPERTIES. Find INTERNET PROTOCOL (TCP/IP) in the list Click Properties Click ADVANCED Click the DNS tab Click ADD Type the IP Address 192.168.2.1 Click ok on everything and run that repair again just to make sure it takes the new info. However this also does not work. Can anyone advise? BeeCeeBee - thank you for your inclusion. Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 Type the IP Address 192.168.2.1 That is nothing more than a common default address for many routers. Using it in TCP/IP will not get you connected to the internet. Return to the same place and remove the numbers. Use the button that sets to select automatically (Whatever language to that effect in Vista) Click ok and then navigate out. See if that helps at all. (I have my doubts in that it was probably set that way to begin with.) However, since this is your friend's laptop, if the numbers that you typed in before replaced other numbers that were already there. Your friend may have set it for a specific IP (static?) and that would be one reason why it would not connect to your network. Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
Jelly Bean Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 Did the machine ever connect? I personaly would of done a system restore to before you fiddled or changed settings. Then try connecting or run wireless network setup wizard. If you try to diagnosis this problem, you may see a window that says that Windows Network Diagnostics “Cannot communicate with Primary DNS Server” http://media.tech-recipes.com/rx_images/ie7/dns_vista.gif To fix this problem, you should do one of two things. First, just upgrade your router to take advantage of this new feature. Second, you can just turn off this TCP feature. I am sure there is an easier way to turn off this TCP feature. I just don’t know it. Here is how I have been doing it: 1. Connect to your network on your troublesome vista box 2. Click on this link while your network connection is working: res://ieframe.dll/dnserror.htm# 3. Click the link that says Diagnose Connection Problems 4. You should see something like this: http://media.tech-recipes.com/rx_images/ie7/tcp_off_vista.gif 5. Click the button that says Turn off the TCP setting that is not compatible with your router. 6. Allow the repair to take place If it works to fix your system, you should notice that your episodic connection problems disappear. Quote Rwy'n ceisio fy ngorau......................
peeboy Posted August 16, 2010 Author Posted August 16, 2010 Thanks everyone for your help.. It's now working. The solution was..... for Vista, go to Control Panel > Network and Sharing Centre, click on the "Manage Network Connections" link (on the left). Right-click on your mate's wireless connection and choose Properties > Networking tab, select the Internet Protocol Version 4 entry in the list and click the Properties button. Make sure the "Obtain an IP address automatically" and the "Obtain DNS server address automatically" options are ticked. Quote
