Guest Honeysweet Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 Hello everyone.. Does anyone know of a good malware detector? For some reason, the top of my window keeps flashing, and I hear a type of "clicking" noise.. so I am wondering if I have any type of malware since Ive already ran my anti-virus and super anti-spyware...with both not finding anything....Id like to check, but am unsure of which malware detection program is a good one for Windows ME. Does anyone know of any good malware programs? Thanks so much! Tarcia -- *Let who you are speaks so loudly I can't hear what you're saying.* Ralph Waldo Emerson
Guest Mike M Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 Re: Malware By window I assume you mean your browser window and this problem happens when browsing. If so this isn't necessarily due to malware and could be due to the way the site you are viewing is encoded. For example I observed this behaviour on two different PCs yesterday when viewing the Emirates airline web site. In that particular case the problem was due my internet security settings which were blocking the creation of a cookie by the site. I allowed the cookie and was able to progress without further problem - in this case I needed the cookie anyway as I was checking flight details and the site used the cookie to temporarily store those details. -- Mike Maltby mike.maltby@gmail.com Honeysweet <HoneySweet1@Gmail.com> wrote: > Hello everyone.. > > Does anyone know of a good malware detector? > > For some reason, the top of my window keeps flashing, and I hear a > type of "clicking" noise.. > so I am wondering if I have any type of malware since Ive already ran > my anti-virus and super anti-spyware...with both not finding > anything....Id like to check, but am unsure of which malware > detection program is a good one for Windows ME. > > Does anyone know of any good malware programs? > > Thanks so much! > > Tarcia

Guest Honeysweet Posted April 20, 2008 Posted April 20, 2008 Re: Malware help please Re: Malware help please I understand it just fine. Unfortunately, it doesnt help, although it does give me an idea of why that may happen sometimes, but it also happens when I dont have any windows open. Having witnessed several HHD failures during the past few months and, ASS-U-ME-ing the 'clicking noises' were not coming from the loudspeakers <g>, I would certainly concur with your diagnosis, notwithstanding any other odd activities. Tarcia, if you've got important (personal?) data (photo's, music, documents, etc.,) on your hard disk, DO NOT attempt to run your machine any more, until you've safely recovered that data. Not going to be fun for me because I am not real familiar with pc > specs and am unsure of what to look for... Be guided by your wallet/purse! In the meantime Tarcia, I don't know how 'handy' you are with techie bits & pieces but before you scrap your PC, you *might* want to consider replacing the old HDD yourself. (Not trying to set you a challenge or even suggesting that you shouldn't buy a new PC of course!!) But a new (replacement) HDD (probably 60-80GB) shouldn't cost more than about $60-70. The job isn't a major feat of engineering (just a few small basic tools required), you could always get help on these NewsGroups and it can be fun with a resulting sense of achievement. But, if the idea of throwing good after bad .... well, you know what I mean.. Just a thought. Guest Mart Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 Re: (Mart)Re: Malware help please Re: (Mart)Re: Malware help please It really is your call Tarcia. If you only use it infrequently and you are generally happy with its performance (i.e. pre-HDD issues!!) then, probably yes - bearing in mind that WinMe is an obsolete operating system which is no longer supported by MS. On the other hand, if as you allude in your reply to Harry (elsewhere in this thread), you'd like a few extra improvements - graphics and probably speed for online gaming, then don't throw more money at your current PC. Instead, put it towards a brand-new, basic PC - just shop around and make sure you buy from a reliable (High Street) store. You don't need to buy an expensive mid to high end machine and you'll still certainly see the difference even at a basic price level from WinMe on an old PC. Try to buy one with XP installed if you can, rather than Vista. But you'll most likely find that most 'deals' will come with Vista installed. You'll soon get used to it <g> As I live on the other side of the 'pond' to you, I can't recommend any bargains - just keep an eye on your national press for adverts for best deals - and reliable stores! I cant ..stand...vista....I have dealt with it because all the new pc's seem to come with it and Ive used my brothers who all have vista..and Im absolutely lost ..lol I am more familiar with XP..but as youve said..most dont seem to come with it anymore.. I actually lucked out and have never had too many issues with ME..but I do want to get rid of it.. I was wondering if I could do it with this pc..just havent tried...I would have to have someone do that also..as I dont know how to change an OS.... Guest webster72n Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 Re: (Mart)Re: Malware help please Re: (Mart)Re: Malware help please Your solution seems to be, to find a trustworthy pc-tech in your neighborhood. If that's not possible, you may have to be guided by suggestions from the 'pro's' here, like Mart or Mike, if they are so inclined, or someone else, if you're lucky. Hope you will be, Harry. Guest Mart Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 Re: (Mart)Re: Malware help please Re: (Mart)Re: Malware help please Can't really help you much further Tarcia, except to remind you that :- 1. If you want to upgrade (presumably to XP) then you'll need to confirm that your existing PC is capable and compatible. Make and Model of existing PC? Speed of CPU? (at least several hundred to 1000 MHz) Size of Memory (RAM)? (256 - 512MB or more!) 2. You'll still need to replace your failing HDD 3. You'll need to purchase a copy of XP 4. You'll still have an old PC (How old is it anyway?) 5. You are (probably) well out of Warranty 6. Cost of a "Trusty" Techie (Thanks Harry) who is even prepared to undertake the work 7. Will he be willing to maintain/support it? - At what price?? Offset those thoughts (and costs) against a 'Brand New' PC with 2 yrs warranty - probably with an LCD monitor and (even if it does come with Vista - and I'm sure you could eventually get used to it <g>) a current (supported) operating system. > I have just been keeping my eyes open for a deal...Ive seen some decent > prices..but then I wonder about the specs... Prices rather than 'specs' are probably the better indicator for most low to medium end users. Competition is high - especially at High Street stores and major (on-line?) retailers. No matter what brand name, most bits are made in the far east and possibly in the same factories. BTW - I'm not sure if Vista lets you set up in "Classic Mode" - similar look, to Win9x - as XP does. Perhaps a Vista user may confirm? Good after bad! - Not a great contest <g> Mart "Honeysweet" <HoneySweet1@Gmail.com> wrote in message news:OoiotjgqIHA.1872@TK2MSFTNGP04.phx.gbl... >I tought about just updating this one..I use it frequently..I dont do >online > gaming with other *gamers*.. > I just like to play basic games that are usually one person..such as > gamehouse or realarcade....those types... > I cant ..stand...vista....I have dealt with it because all the new pc's > seem > to come with it and Ive used my brothers who all have vista..and Im > absolutely lost ..lol > I am more familiar with XP..but as youve said..most dont seem to come with > it anymore.. > I actually lucked out and have never had too many issues with ME..but I do > want to get rid of it.. > I was wondering if I could do it with this pc..just havent tried...I would > have to have someone do that also..as I dont > know how to change an OS.... > I have just been keeping my eyes open for a deal...Ive seen some decent > prices..but then I wonder about the specs...and I just dont trust asking > the > sales reps anymore....they arent very truthful > > > Tarcia > > "Mart" <mart(NoSpam)@nospam.nospam> wrote in message > news:erM8q5LqIHA.1164@TK2MSFTNGP04.phx.gbl... >> It really is your call Tarcia.
