lon0 Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 Hi all, I am running Windows XP Home, with Service pack 2. I have recently installed a new Epson LQ-300+II printer with the latest drivers. It is connected through a serial port on my computer. The problem which I am having is that whenever I try to print anything, I receive a message stating that It 'cannot create/open file mapping', the printer still processes and prints the jobs I send it, but every time I send a job this message pops up. Anybody got any ideas? Thanks Quote
RandyL Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 The only thing I could find is the LQ-300 Impact Printer. Is this yours? If so it's ancient (serial port connection) and hasn't been supported since Windows 98. Epson LQ-300, Drivers & Downloads - Technical Support - Epson America, Inc. I'm not aware of any new printers being sold with serial port connections. Quote We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. If so it's ancient (serial port connection) and hasn't been supported since Windows 98. Epson LQ-300, Drivers & Downloads - Technical Support - Epson America, Inc. I'm not aware of any new printers being sold with serial port connections. I actually upgraded from the LQ-300 and bought the LQ-300+II directly from Epson, who are still making them. They haven't supported any new drivers for a long time though :( The LQ-300 actually worked fine on the same XP computer I am using through Serial port. I have narrowed down the problem I have. I fiddled with some settings and I now don't have any problem printing from any program other than Word, which still comes up with the message as before. I have a feeling that it is not the way in which the printer is connected to the PC, but how Word is coping (badly). I can't just get a new printer because I need a track printer and any models which have updated drivers with them are REALLY expensive. Any help is appreciated. Lon0 Quote

Get a newer device rather than try to mess around configuring it It does have a USB connection as well, but I am out of USB cables and ports on the PC. Its all extra cost that I'm trying to avoid. Also, as this is something I have never had a problem with before on this PC I wish to find out how to fix it for future reference, we have many serial port printers here and I'm pretty sure more will be doing this if we get new...er printers. Thank you. Lon0 Quote
RandyL Posted August 25, 2010 Posted August 25, 2010 Can you please find your printer from the Epson support site so we can identify it. Please supply a direct link to the support page. Can you please verify what operating system you are attempting to use it on? In post one you stated that you can print but you get an error. the problem which I am having is that whenever I try to print anything, I receive a message stating that It 'cannot create/open file mapping', the printer still processes and prints the jobs I send it, but every time I send a job this message pops up In post four you said you upgraded from the LQ-300 to the LQ-300+II which I can't find. I actually upgraded from the LQ-300 and bought the LQ-300+II directly from Epson, who are still making them. They haven't supported any new drivers for a long time though. The LQ-300 actually worked fine on the same XP computer I am using through Serial port. Also in post four you stated that you fiddled with settings and now you only have a problem printing from Word. I have narrowed down the problem I have. I fiddled with some settings and I now don't have any problem printing from any program other than Word, which still comes up with the message as before. I have a feeling that it is not the way in which the printer is connected to the PC, but how Word is coping (badly). The point is that the first thing that needs to be determined is if your printer is even compatable with your operating system. For that we need a link to the Epson support page for your printer. Once we figure that out we can continue. If it is not compatable, that is no drivers or software, then you can fiddle all you want or try third party drivers which is usually fruitless. You may have got it to work but with errors because it is not compatable. After all there is no way we know what you mean when you say you fiddled with it. I have narrowed down the problem I have. I fiddled with some settings and I now don't have any problem printing from any program other than Word, which still comes up with the message as before. I have a feeling that it is not the way in which the printer is connected to the PC, but how Word is coping (badly). To me this seems to say that you have managed somehow to get an unsupported printer to work some what. I can't just get a new printer because I need a track printer and any models which have updated drivers with them are REALLY expensive. If the printer is unsupported then you really have no choice but to buy a supported one. You need the drivers. Eventually no one is going to spend many hours writing software for old devices. No easy fix I'm afraid. Unless you want to invest years learning code and implimenting it on a case basis. So anyway like I said. Link us to the printer so we can see if it's possible. If it's not supported then it's not a Word problem but a software, driver, printer problem. Quote We are all members helping other members.
