Guest Nomen Nescio Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 Why was the DNS Server service installed as part of the installation of Active Directory?
Guest Meinolf Weber Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 Re: Q Hello Nomen, If you promote a server to a domain controller and it is the first one and you have no DNS server it automatically installs the DNS server, because AD is based on DNS for working. As Meinolf said, it is required for AD. Matter of fact, make sure you do not use your ISP's DNS in the machine's IP properties or expect numerous problems. DCPROMO probably added the DNS in IP properties as 127.0.0.1. Change it to the actual IP address of the server. Also, make sure the domain controller is not multihomed unless you team the NICs. Multihomed un-teamed NICs can cause numerous problems with domain controller functionality. In addition, all clients MUST only use the server for their DNS address. You can configure a forwarder for efficient Internet resolution, which this article shows you how to configure a forward to your ISP's DNS: 323380 - HOW TO Configure DNS for Internet Access in Windows Server 2003 (forwarding) : http://support.microsoft.com/?id=323380 Also, some info about AD and DNS. 291382 - Frequently asked questions about Windows 2000 DNS and Windows Server 2003 DNS http://support.microsoft.com/?id=291382 If you have additional questions, feel free to ask. -- Regards, Ace This posting is provided "AS-IS" with no warranties or guarantees and confers no rights.
