Mapping to an external usb hard drive attached to the server

Periodically, I have to install software and most of the sites have pcs in

the server room instead of under the desks. How do I map to the external hard

drive I have attached to the server so I can install the software on each pc?

The way I map to the c drive of the server is by entering the ip address and

then \c$ but I need to be able to map to the external drive letter as well.

Please advise. Thank you. Workgroups to do not apply here.

Share the hard drive as something, and use \\servername\sharname.

I suspect that the administrative shares like C$ are created at startup

time for local hard drives - not when a USB device is plugged in.

You likely need to manually create a share on the server to the drive.

The same thing applies to CD/DVD drives.

If you have rmtshare from the old NT resource kit, available at

ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/winnt/winnt-

public/reskit/nt40/i386/RMTSHAR.EXE

and perhaps elsewhere too? - it can be used to create a share remotely

from another machine.

Remember to delete the share when you are done, or it will keep trying to

create it whenever the server is rebooted, even if the drive is no longer

there.

Re: Mapping to an external usb hard drive attached to the server

Would you please go tthrough the exact steps that need to be done at the

server?

I think I right clicked in the external drive and chose share, but nothing

happened.

After I tried to share the external drive.I thought I could go to the pc and

go to map network drive enter the the server IP \ the drive letter, but no

success.

Do you think I have to do this from compmgmt.msc on the server?

Thank you. It will make life a lot easier for installs.

That is indeed what you need to do. If you're not sure how to share

something, you can look in help & support - but this is a very basic part of

Windows networking!

Nope...Explorer.

Maybe.....or just copy the software images to the server itself, which wil

be more reliable.

Re: Mapping to an external usb hard drive attached to the server

Well that was a rude response. I have gone through all of the steps and the

reason why I am asking you is because they have not worked. Microsoft has

been known to not always be cut and dry and there are always different ways

of doing things, but if you do not want to advise, please do not.

Are you an "MVP" to help others or to just respond with rude comments?

Re: Mapping to an external usb hard drive attached to the server

IMO, there was nothing rude about that. SOMETIMES people ask a question so

basic, one with the answers so prevalent, both in Windows Help and on the

internet, that it is reasonable to "help" the OP by showing them how to find

that information themselves. After all, knowing where to find the answers

is a skill every IT person should possess. Right?

That said, I did a Google search on "How to share folders" and found some

pretty good and easy to understand answers.

I'm truly sorry you took offense; none was intended. You will see that I

suggested that you could find the answers to your question in help & support

(you hadn't indicated whether you'd looked in there already). When you post

in usenet, it's caveat emptor - and as you're posting in a Windows server

group & indicating that you're working in a server room, it is not odd that

someone would assume you know how to share folders already. You didn't tell

anyone what steps you'd followed, or what errors you were getting.

My advice to you, if you're going to use these newsgroups, is to search

google/other resources before posting, then post clearly & concisely when

need be, & don't take things personally. Nobody in here is getting paid to

help you in any way. We're all just volunteers. Remember that when you read

someone's reply. If you found my response rude, you ought to see what the

rest of usenet (especially outside of MS newsgroups) is like! Pax.

John:

I am well aware of how to do a google search. I have already done that. The

reason why I visit this newsgroup is because each tech's experience can be

different and some people may have had a similiar issue or do "you always"

have a positive result? If you do, that is very rare. Most tech's, myself

includes speak amongst themselves to get a second opinion. You response comes

across as condescending and am capable of doing an internet search. You do

not have to respond to any of my questions. You have not given any

alternative suggestion. Thank you anyways.

I was just responding to your decision to call names here. It obviously

isn't helpful. If I don't get answers to my questions that are specific

enough, I just ask for more information - not call people names.

You wrote:

You say "nothing happened". After you closed that window, did the drive

show up in Explorer with the hand underneath it, like other shared objects?

If it did, from a workstation open Explorer, and in the address type

\\serverName and press enter. Does the shared external drive show up? Can

you connect to it by double-clicking on it?

Re: Mapping to an external usb hard drive attached to the server

I think I mentioned already that I had searched for this issue already online

before visiting this group which I always do. That is common sense. The

reason why I came to this group is to get another opinion and/or alternative

methods. Each tech has their own way of doing things.

Anyways,I figured out the issue on my own and learned on my own. I work with

proprietary Market Data Equipment/Software that will not allow you to share

such a device even though the server runs Windows 2003. So, my work around

will have to be either copying the necessary files over to where they can

accessed or using a cd instead and sharing the cd drive. I am not sure if

this will help someone else, but they may have a similiar question at some

point. Thank you.
