Windows Server 2008 non-functional network

I have a new Windows 2008 X64 server that has decided it's network is now

non-functional. Almost nothing works any more (no remote desktop, Exchange

etc are all non functional) and the network connectivity icon indicates it's

not connected - however I can ping it from a client machine.

Network and Sharing center will not open. Exchange services will not start -

it's pretty much hosed my box (and I only built it today, so ther are no

backups). Any suggestions on what to do or try? Detect and repair fails

miserably. I don't know of any other way of trying to fix the issue.

Are there any errors in the event logs?

Re: Windows Server 2008 non-functional network

There were 100s - I didn't even know where to start. I had just removed AD

from the old 2003 server when it happened. I looked in the registry, and

noticed the nameservers were still configured to the old server, so changed

them (in registry because I couldn't open the network configuration) and

then rebooted - it took so long I went to bed.

It seemed to come back up ok, but I still had problems with exchange, so

I've rebooted agan... and magically something has decided to install

updates, and it's now stuck at "Configuring Updates Stage 1 of 3 - 0%

complete" and has been for about half an hour, so looks like it's royally

hosed now.

Re: Windows Server 2008 non-functional network

Depending on the update 1/2 hour wouldn't be unusual. It sounds like you had

one 2003 DC, installed a 2008 DC, then removed the 2003 DC. Is this correct?

Can you detail the steps you took and after which step the problems started?
