Configuring Updates - stuck at 0%

I've rebooted a server and *somehow* updates had been installed, and now on

reboot it's stuck at 0% on update 1 of 3, and has been for about 30

minutes - any suggestions? Unfortunately it's my PDC and Exchange server, so

it's important to me to get it running again. And of course, given I only

switched to 2008 and Exchange 2007 yesterday from my old server, I don't

have a backup yet either :(

Hello Dean,

 

Was it a clean install or an inplace upgrade? Did you try a reboot or a reboot

to safe mode?

Meinolf,

 

It was a clean install, and all I did was select to reboot (not "Install

Updates and shut down" and when it rebooted, it just went to the Configuring

updates screen and is still at 0%. Short of ignoring the instructions and

turning the computer off, I have no option to start it in safe mode now - I

have no options at all really.

 

I do have file system access to it, so am copying the exchange folder off as

we speak in the hope that I might be able to recover Exchange later if this

doesn't come back up.

Hello Dean,

 

Just found your other posting, "Windows Server 2008 non-functional network".

Please describe more in detail about your upgrading, what i was looking before

and the amount of servers with which functions, etc. You are also talking

there about removing an old DC and haveing problems with DNS etc.

Hi,

 

I previously had 1 server running Server 2003 and Exchage 2003. I built a

new server yesterday with 2008 X64, promoted it to AD (Global Catalogue

Server) and installed Exchange 2007. I migrated the Exchage mailboxes over

and the demoted the 2003 server out of the domain - that's when this fun

started. Initially, I had no network, I managed to get that to work then

Exchange wouldn't start (transport problems I think - but I cannot get on

the machine to give any more detail). I made a few changes (namely removing

the old 2003 server records from the DNS as it was still there as a domain

controller etc which it was no longer) and rebooted. That's when it decided

to install updates for me.

Hello Dean,

 

So the 2008 is DC, Exchange server? Is it also DNS server and Global catalog?

Did you chekc that the 5 FSMO roles are on the new 2008 DC?

 

Did you try to follow this way fro removing the old DC with ADSIEdit, even

it is not shown for 2008:
