hi there,

i used my laptop first thing this morning and everything was fine. i started my laptop again around 2 hours ago and upon opening all my documents, folders and photos have dissapeared. Its as if i have just purchased the laptop. I have tried to 'system restore' the laptop but nothing has happened. The laptop is around 2.5 years old but i have never had a problem before. I use Vista as the operating system. Can anyone help i am pulling my hair out trying to figure out what has happened as really need to get hold of my documents and photos.

Thanks in advance for anyone who responses.

Hi and welcome to fpch.

Assuming Vista from your details. If you ....

Click on Start > Run ......type in ......

Word documents end in .doc and photos are usually .jpg

Make sure you "Search Everywhere"

If they exist the search will locate them.

There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!

Hi, and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help by the way,

I am just wondering if a new user account has been created by accident somehow.

Open control panel, then click on user accounts, then see if there is more than the one you know about, if there is and you opened that one, instead of your normal account, that would explain why you find all folders empty, as they would be for a new user.

I think you should concentrate on data recovery first or fixing the corrupt profile. Once you reinstall chances are everything will be lost.

I agree with Randy, find what you need and then burn it to CD/DVD or put it on a USB stick.

you can try and fix the user profile, but again I would try the above first.

If the PC came with the OS pre loaded then there is probably a partition on the HDD that has the OS on it
