i have a hp compaq 610, centrino dual, 120gb hdd, 2gb ram and running vista home premium.

i bought windows 7 home premium home premium urgrade.

before i try myself to install it, i have a question or two.

will my data, ie, downloads, bookmarks, installed progs, email & ebay accounts, etc all remain where they are and intact?

do i need to do any preperations before installing?

will my network settings, painstakingly worked out, all be as is?

maybe there are other issues i have not thought of?

Hi Tismehi, good to see you again.

Although not the same, I bought a new PC recently with W7 home on it, but then bought the upgrade to W7 Pro. It went perfectly OK and disturbed nothing.

However, in your case it is a bit more of an upgrade, so I would first be sure you have everything backed up, then also make sure you have a system restore point made as well, just to be safe.

Microsoft do say something similar anyway, but they also state the upgrade should not change or remove existing files and documents.

Taken from this page-

Upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7 - Help & How-to - Microsoft Windows

Upgrading is the most convenient way to get Windows 7 on your computer, because it keeps your files, settings, and programs from Windows Vista in place.

Please note this though--

If your current edition of Windows Vista can't be upgraded to the edition of Windows 7 that you want to use, you can still install Windows 7 by using the Custom installation option instead. However, the Custom option doesn't preserve your files, programs, or settings. For a step-by-step tutorial on how to perform a custom installation---

It then gives a link for more info, but if you are doing a workable upgrade, there should be no problem.

Hi Tismehi, I'm pretty sure that you won't have a problem upgrading and keeping your personal files, settings, and programs intact. To make certain of this use the link to Microsofts own site for complete advice on this subject.

Upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7

Read carefully what it says on the page linked to. And use the link provided on that page to download the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor.

If you are still unsure of anything, then please post back and someone here with more knowledge on this subject than myself will help you out.

I thought I knew today...I'll try again tomorrow. :)

thanks nev and frank,

that was doubly good sound advice, just exactly why someone like me uses these forums.

i downloaded, installed and run the microsoft upgrade adviser and it firstly said i can indeed upgrade but then goes on to say that i should uninstall some things first.

i do not have a problem uninstalling windows defender but i'm wondering if i uninstall my itunes will i loose all my stuff. i only just got my iphone 4 last week and it seemed to take me ages getting the itunes all set up.

also suggested that the intel proset wireless wifi be uninstalled too.

this was not easy for me to set up and with a wireless printer too - a bit concerning.

any thoughts on what would happen if i upgraded ignoring the microsoft recommendations.

Backing up Itunes to an external media is not too difficult to do. Follow my link below to Apples own site for more information.

Backing up Itunes

As for the Intel proset wireless. I have no knowledge of that. But hopefully someone will come along who has.

I thought I knew today...I'll try again tomorrow. :)

with a few snags and a phone call to hp compaq support, i managed to successfully upgrade to windows 7 ok.

my wi-fi and network is all intact. as are my files and most all of my user settings.

i backed up all as a precaution and even itunes fired up as usual.

thanks for the advice again.
