Hi,

If you are running XP with just 128 MB RAM it must be slow. The minimum I would consider using would be 512 MB.

From the scans the motherboard will support 1GB (2 x 512 MB modules ).

Crucial will make recommendations after it scans your system.

I like Crucial ( Kingston is another good make ).

It is not worth buying cheap RAM - you only get what you pay for.

You must have a very old system with only 128MB RAM.

Upgrading to 1GB will vastly improve the running speed of your system.

Yes it is old! I only used it for about 2 years then got a laptop. it's not been used for 5 years. I spent about 3 days doing updates for windows, I got them all but 1 ( KB982381) and Ill leave that till i get ram. thanks for the input ;) i'll pop back and check for more posts just in case i fry the mother board.

I will add if you don't mind, that the CPU is also a tad slow, so admittedly a fairly good improvement will be seen with the extra RAM, it will still be a snail in comparison to say a new Windows 7 machine built with say a quad core CPU and larger RAM.

At the age of the computer is it worth buying the extra RAM?

Nev.

It seems to say that the maximum is 1GB as already posted but it doesnt say what the max speed is, it states PC133 which is VERY old

are these the ones you ordered Scan.co.uk: 512MB PC-133 RAM Memory - 0741

you should notice an improvement instantly, just remember to set the windows page file accordingly

I think so dalo :(? i'm just waiting for it to get here, think i'll have a little wait yet. it was my sons fiancee who picked them out for me and is going to fit them on monday at the earliest!

Could you give me a quick idea what you mean about the windows page file or a link so i can read up on it please and i'll draw her attention to this.

I've decided after it's fixed up my ex is going to have it as for the last 8 years all she will play is spider solitaire. And last week we got her to use face book ( not a good move ) and in between throwing things at us she is learning how to turn it on and off lol.so i think my old pc is a good place to start for now. ty for the reply and i'll keep you up on events.

Set it to 1.5x the amount of RAM in the system (in your case 1.5GB is the size you need to increase the page file to)

How to manually change the size of the virtual memory paging file

You must be logged on as an administrator or as a member of the administrator’s group to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may prevent you from completing this procedure.

To manually change the size of virtual memory, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl in the Open box, and then press ENTER.
  2. Click the Advanced tab, and then under Performance click Settings.
  3. Click the Advanced tab, and then under Virtual memory click Change.
  4. Under Drive [Volume Label], click the drive that contains the paging file that you want to change.
  5. Under Paging file size for selected drive, click Custom size, type a new paging file size in megabytes (MB) in the Initial size (MB) or Maximum size (MB) box, and then click Set.
  6. Click OK to close the dialog box and apply changes.

Note After you change the size of the paging file, you may be prompted to restart Windows. If you are prompted to restart, the changes will not take effect until Windows is restarted

Thanks for that Dalo! I'm sure this will be very welcome info on the day. Now! the ram arrived bit finicky arse won't let me look at it till my sons girl gets there on monday to fit it :( so I guess i'll have to get back to you on whether we ordered the right one's or not? i'm back home now sulking lol.

It's really easy to fit, it will only go in one way - look at the notches on the RAM and fit accordingly :)

whip the side panel off and the RAM slots are normally in the top right corner of the board

You have to move the white tabs down (this will allow the RAM to go in) and when the RAM is inserted these should 'click' into place :)
