PseFrank Posted September 4, 2010 Posted September 4, 2010 Hello Emma, and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help Good news for you. I'm pretty sure you can fit your new Sata drive in your computer. Went to Local PC parts Shop and they say, Nope. wont work that way... it wont load your OS on Boot up? If the staff at your local PC shop had been a little more knowledgeable, or at least a bit more helpful they would have told you that what you need is an Ide to Sata Bidirectional converter. In the area where you live there are several Maplin stores. The only reason I mention them is because here in Cambridge I find their staff both knowledgeable and helpful. It won't cost you anything to call into your nearest store and explain your predicament. I'm confident that they will have what you want for no more than about £20....Even cheaper on the net.... Just Reload my OS as normal? thankyou for any help Quote
PseFrank Posted September 4, 2010 Posted September 4, 2010 What you have linked to should work for you Emma, however I have not been in just the same position as you are in with the Sata/Ide thing before. There are some variables that I'm uncertain of. So I'm going to sit back along with yourself and wait until someone with more knowledge comes along to advise you. I am confident though that you can go ahead and get your Bidirectional converter. Quote I thought I knew today...I'll try again tomorrow. :) Need help with your computer problems? Plastic Nev Posted September 5, 2010 Posted September 5, 2010 Hum, not too sure about this myself having not tried that route, however it will perhaps help someone else to know what messages you get if any on screen, I assume you are seeing the normal start up BIOS screen that is telling you there is no hard drive present? Anything like that may be of help. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here. If Free PC Help has helped you then please consider a donation. Plastic Nev Posted September 5, 2010 Posted September 5, 2010 Hi again, OK, it probably will refuse to go anywhere when it (the BIOS) can't see a hard drive. It may just be a simple driver needed for the hard drive, or some re configure of the BIOS so it detects the drive as a SATA one, but not sure. As I said not an area I have been in. However I must ask, is there a reason why the SATA drive cannot be taken back and exchanged for an IDE one? Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here. So not able to take it back... nor could i get another hard Drive of that size in IDE for that Price (typically smething always goes Pop when you have Just got back from holiday and have No cash till pay day) think the Driver may need to be looked into First... Cant see anyhing in the Bios i can change that will make a Difference. Quote
PseFrank Posted September 5, 2010 Posted September 5, 2010 Sorry to ask another question, but is the drive new or second hand? Did it come out of another computer? viva1angel Posted September 5, 2010 Author Posted September 5, 2010 Sorry to ask another question, but is the drive new or second hand? Did it come out of another computer? yes it came out of another Drive... was Formatted before it was given to me Quote
Dalo Harkin Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 I'll just say dont ever use converters when it comes to drives, you should have bought a SATA PCI card and used that rather than an adapter cable. IDE runs much slower than SATA and this would allow for future upgrades too....
