I have a program which needs to transfer data to my iphone over my wireless network, but it is failing every time. When I ping the iPhone (192.168.2.5) it gives the message "Reply from 192.168.2.3: Destination host unreachable", packets sent and received are both 4. [192.168.2.3 is the IP address of my PC]. The PC has a wired connection to the router. This is failing even in Safe Mode with Networking! I can ping the main PC and the Bluray player that is on the network and I can ping the PC from the iPhone, but the IP address for the iPhone cannot be "seen" by the PC.

Any ideas what the problem might be?

Hello there.

I myself am not in the know on iPhones but let me see if I can at least give you some starter help.

Have you run the setup on the iPhone?

Have you tried turning off the wireless router password and try to reconnnect?

Have you set the wireless router to allow this connection or share?

Thanks for the reply. Answers to your questions below:-

Have you run the setup on the iPhone?

I assume you mean the setup for the program in question, yes it is all installed OK and the iphone connects to the internet over wi-fi

Have you tried turning off the wireless router password and try to reconnnect?

Do you mean the PSK - I'm a bit wary of doing that, especially as everything else works fine (BluRay, laptop & iphone access internet without a problem)

Have you set the wireless router to allow this connection or share?

Not sure how to do that, I've logged on to the router and looked at all the settings which look ok (to my untrained eye!)

Sorry I'm not much help, it just seems weird that this one share won't work!

You cant send/receive data from a phone to a PC other than by a data cable or email.

you can use a bluetooth dongle in the PC and send/receive via bluetooth, but you wont get a wireless connection between a PC and a phone :)

I dont see how, getting data sent from WIFI as in using the web at McDonalds etc is different to allowing the transfer of data from a PC to an Iphone.

you need to create a link between the PC and the Iphone and the only way to do that is a cable or the other methods I mentioned before.

We may be getting crossed wires, but give us as much info as you can on the app (the name etc) and we will try and help you.

Dont take the above as negative, I am trying to help :)

I don't think you're being negative - I appreciate the help! The details of the app and what it is trying to do are here:-

Frequently Asked Questions

As you can see, it is supposed to use wi-fi (they say Apple won't allow third party software to transfer data via the cable!)

Does that help at all?

Same problem

@aimber - I'm having the exact same problem with a different app! (for me the app is Air Sharing)

@Dalo - It's not a direct connection. The program(s) aimber and I are referring to is basically similar to if I shared out a file on a computer connected to my network, and accessed it from another computer on that same network. My program - Air Sharing - is exactly like that actually. It should allow me to type in the IP address in a browser, and download/upload files to the program. I've looked at multiple support forum posts regarding this, and tried everything I can think of.

The underlying issue: Even though my router sees my iPhone without problems, my iPhone connects to my wireless network without problems, and my computers also connect to the network without problems (desktop is wired, laptop via wireless), neither computer is able to ping the iPhone or access the program via the suggested methods.

The computers are able to ping each other just fine, but neither is able to get the iPhone.

The strange thing is that I had this WORKING just a while ago (a month? maybe 2?). I've been searching to see if perhaps Apple's new software update to 4.02 screwed something up, but so far no luck.

The iPhone OS is really the only thing that's changed in the intervening time. the program hasn't gotten updates, the router settings haven't changed at all, my computers haven't changed at all...I just don't know what the deal is!

VERY aggravating.

Have you tried adding the MAC address of the Iphone into the routers 'accepted devices' ?

The only thing that seems to be blocking anything is the Iphone itself (not having one, I'm a Blackberry person meself :D)

Im not familiar with the security software on them, I would contact the owner of the APP and see what they say as you wont be the first person having the issue and as its a specifically designed piece of software support isnt easy to come by
