Hi all,

I'm trying to connect to a network that will only support 802.11g network cards. I have a (almost brand new) Sony Vaio VPCY2 laptop that has an Atheros AR9285 network card. I can't connect to the network, but when I googled the spec for this computer, it said that the network adaptor was 802.11 b/g/n.

Do I have a network adaptor that won't connect to this g-only network? Or should my card, as I presumed, be able to do all three? If so, how?

Many thanks,

Kelly

You are correct in presuming it should connect ok.

What is actually happening - does it say the connection has failed, can you see the network, are there any error messages?

So have you installed the software that came with the card or are you using windows to try and connect to the router?

When you turn the PC on, in the bottom right there should be an icon which looks like a tower or a set of bars (indicating wireless) right click on that and connect to a network, it should show networks that are within range and show what security they use.

choose the one that it yours and click connect.

you will then be prompted for a passphrase (if there is security enabled) input that and you should connect.

Hope this helps

Hi guys,

Thanks for your replies. In answer, I can connect to the network, but it says that I have limited connectivity. I think it may be a problem with registering my computer to the network I'm trying to access- it's a university network. I've now emailed IT support...

Cheers,

Kelly
