sounds not working

i seem to be having an issue with sound, i am using windows xp, sp 2. the computer will play game sounds and music but not media player music, i have checked the main volume control and the media player control, neither are muted, please help

Media player uses different codecs depending on what the audio is encoded in.

Also I would install service pack three for XP (SP3), and also check for the latest version of media player is installed which should be version 12.

With everything updated that in itself may cure the problem, if not then codecs may be the next to try.
