Anyone running Java on WS 2008?

Is anyone running Java (32 bit) on IE7 under Windows Server 2008?

I have done all the steps to try and trouble shoot this, but it does not

support applets on my machine. I have reset IE7, uninstalled, confirmed

uninstalled with Windows Install Cleanup, turned off AV and antispyware,

reinstalled, and when I go to a test applet page the JRE (v 6u6) shows

in the system tray, and a blank window pops up with a little Java icon

in the top left corner, but nothing happens on the IE7 web page that

should show a test applet running (one of the standard ones on the

Internet, not anything I wrote).

The kicker is, JRE runs fine with Firefox.

To me this looks like some sort of security issue. IE7 is configured to

run Java, I have even put the security and privacy settings at the

lowest. ActiveX etc. all turned on.

I am wondering if there is some issue that Java won't run on WS 2008 for

security reasons.

Is it possible that DEP is somehow messing with it?

Yes, I run with IE Ehnced Security turned off. I tried turning off DEP

for IE 7 32 bit, and no change from that either :-(

Man, that's a tough one to figure out. Did you already try installing

the May 2008 Application Compatibility update?

I thought you may have had it with this one, as I was not aware of this

update! Alas, it did not fix it, same behavior as before :-(

Crap, I thought that might have done it. Although I am not surprised

it didn't work. It's probably some dumb setting somewhere.

In that KB article, it mentions Sun Microsystems J2SE Runtime

Environment 5.0 Update 9. What about downgrading and giving that

version a try?

No problem. Let the group know if it works so we can pass on the

results.

Just finished the test. No change, doesn't work with 5.0 update 9.

What is really driving me crazy is that the JRE appears int he the tray,

but instead of the applet starting to run, a SEPARATE windows appears.

It's blank, nothing in the right click context menu, it has the Java

"coffee cup" logo in the top left corner. The window closes when the JRE

is no longer needed (ie on another non-Java page). I think this is an

obvious clue, but I have disabled everything like popup blocker,

firewalls, AV, etc. I have not been able to get anyone from Sun to respond.

If anyone has ideas, please chip in! I have another WS2008 PC,

bare-bones install, and JRE works fine! I verified the MS updates are

the same on each machine, so it's not a missing update or extra update.

The two biggest differences so far is the non-working machine has

Office and Visual Studio 2008 installed, so I guess my next step is to

install them and see if one of them is causing the problem.

That is truly a stumper. You'd think that at least the 6.0 u6 version

would *fix* whatever's broken but apparently not. The only other thing

I can think of would be to remove any and all Java stuff, reboot, and

then go through the registry looking for any orphaned entries or

references to Sun Java and blow them out. That's the hard way but if

you're desperate, maybe try that. It's possible you could also do the

above but use CCleaner's registry cleaner tool. I'm not sure where the

installer puts the java.exe on Server 2008 but it's probably the same

as Vista. If you uninstall it, make sure there's not directories being

left behind that might contain config info as well. If I hear anything

I'll post it here for you.

Re: Anyone running Java on WS 2008?

So here's a funny one...I uninstalled all Java (again), and I checked

the add-ons in IE7. There is a Browser Helper Object, jp2ssv.dll, Java

Plug In 2 SSV Help, reported as "currently loaded". I did a file search

and that file does not exist on my machine!

I wonder how I can get rid of it? I know I can disable it but I am not

sure that is enough? I can delete ActiveX controls but not Browser

helper objects.

OK, killed it by searching the registry by filename (jp2ssv.dll) and

deleting that entry. It does not show up now.

I'll reinstall Java 6u6 and test again, I don't expect anything will

change. I'll report back if it does.

Man this is frustrating...

OK here's a new clue --

I ran the Java Console, to see if it did anything when I went to a page.

When I went to an applet page, I got an error popping up on the Console!

It says

Error: unexpectedly couldn't get the ClassLoaderInfo for the

codebase/cache key

That is a clue. Perhaps pass it along to the folks at Sun and see what

they say? Seems others are reporting this as well.

How brave do you feel about maybe trying Java 7 and seeing if it will

run on 2008? http://download.java.net/jdk7/binaries/

It's not final but maybe you'll have some luck with it.

LOL I'll try anything! I downloaded and installed the whole JDK, and I

get the exact same ClassLoaderInfo error and the little window opened up.

I checked today, Sun opened an error on it although they say they can't

reproduce it. I pointed them to another person having the same problem.

Hopefully someone can offer some advice, I offered to debug if they want

to pass some info my way.

Wow, beyond that, I am stumped. I'll keep my eyes open though.

Seems Sun released a version of Java 6.0 today (Java SE 6 Update 10

Beta (Build 14)) that has better Vista support. It is a beta but

maybe worth a shot:

I have been using build 22 of the 6.0 beta from their site - no change.

BUT! Yesterday I installed IE 8 beta 1, and it WORKS!!! No problems at

all with applets now! I can live with IE 8 beta 1 for what I am doing.

Thanks for all your help!

Wow, build 22! In any case, glad you have something working in the

interim and hopefully Sun figures out the bugs.
