jmanchand Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 (edited) Hi, I have an HP Pavillion 7965 that wont boot after reinstalling windows xp! All I get now is a black screen with blinking underscore in top left hand corner! i've tried hundreds of fixes but to no avail for a week & a half now & it's driving me nuts! I know my way round a pc but this is beyond me! Any suggestions or advice would mean a great deal to me, but be warned I've tried most things already!! :( Hope I've posted this in the proper section! jmanchand Posted September 16, 2010 Author Posted September 16, 2010 (edited) Done that a thousand times & visa versa to load Ubuntu live cd, recovery disks, xp cd's & repair & Seatools check cd's! thanks for your fast reply! Edited September 16, 2010 by jmanchand
Dalo Harkin Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 Have you set the first boot device to the correct HDD? is there more than one HDD in the system? After you set the first boot device (I always recommend disabling the others) failing that can you give us more info, HDD type IDE/SATA, using onboard SATA or a PCI card Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
DSTM Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 I had exactly the same issue, twice and once it was the Ram sticks I had to swap around, and the second time,I accidently unseated a Ram stick. May pay to check they are seated properly including your Video Card. Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.
jmanchand Posted September 16, 2010 Author Posted September 16, 2010 I had 2 hdd's installed, a 60gb Maxtor IDE as slave & the primary Seagate 300gb IDE, onboard PCI! I swapped them round to see if it made a difference but finally disconnected the Maxtor & now just have the Seagate installed as primary drive! It shows up in bios fine with no problems in any areas!
jmanchand Posted September 16, 2010 Author Posted September 16, 2010 I've reseated both ram video card & just about every other item in pc to no avail! I took out both my 512mb sticks & repaced with a working 256mb stick! Showed up in bios fine, reseated that even, but still I get that black screen!
Dalo Harkin Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 Are the drives set correctly between master/slave on the cable as well as the HDDs themselves (jumpers)? If more than one drive is present then in the boot order it should list either:- HDD-0 HDD-1 CD/DVD Rom USB etc ect or:- Maxtor (numbers) Seagate (numbers) CD/DVD Rom USB etc Just make sure the drive with the OS is at the very top and disable the rest. I should just let you know that I've even tried a new IDE cable also, with no change! Also that the operating system that I'm trying to install is Windows XP Home Premium! It goes through the whole process no probs, reboots & still gives me this black screen of death!? Edited September 16, 2010 by jmanchand
Dalo Harkin Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 Then either the drive is knackered or their is a problem with the IDE cable are you 100% sure that you installed it to the 300GB and not the 60GB~? I'm 100% sure it's the Seagate 300gb drive in there, as I have the Maxtor here in front of me as we speak! I've also booted up with no hdd whatsoever installed, & I still get the same darn thing!? :( Seatools tells me everything is fine when both short & long tests are done on the Segate hdd!

jmanchand Posted September 16, 2010 Author Posted September 16, 2010 Monitor is Blank after Starting the Computer HP Pavilion 7965 Desktop PC (US/CAN) - HP Customer Care (United States - English)# Thnx, but I don't think it's a monitor problem, as I can work off Ubuntu Live CD (Linux!) no probs! Only I'm not Linux litterate, so it doesn't help, as all I can do from there is hdd testing!

I always zero my hdd, before installing winXP or anything else, just to make sure nothing is left on my HDD. The Seatools will do the short & long tests with with good results but comes up with an error when trying any sort of low level formatting!? I've tried dban & maxblast with same errors when trying to zero the hdd! Any other tests in any other prog'ms tell me the drive is fine, formats fine & shows up fine in bios fine etc! Also this black screen appears when I don't even have the hard drive in the PC at all??

ErikAlbert Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 Jesus man, you tried already so many things, hard to find something new. It would drive me crazy too. I guess, changing the boot sequence, didn't help either. Booting directly from HARDDISK, not CD or DISKETTE. In such situation, I would bring my computer to my computer-repair-shop and let them fix it or you wait here for a solution. ErikAlbert Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 (edited) If we had that information,it would been easier to find the cause. Very true, we have wasted 21 posts on this guy. Pffft. Isn't it true when WinXP isn't activated after 30 days, you get a black screen on your computer ? The same must happen with an illegal winXP, I think.
