Plastic Nev Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 Hi, Ok back to basics and you may have tried this already, but have you checked the speakers are definitely plugged into the speaker socket, (lime green) is the power connected to the speakers and turned on, if yes to that, a double click on the speaker icon on the bottom task bar will bring up the full control panel for sound, check that the slide buttons are at the top and that there are no ticks in any "Mute" boxes. RandyL Posted September 19, 2010 Posted September 19, 2010 Have you checked for updated drivers from Compaq support? Do you have the original XP disks that came with your computer. Did the sound work before? When did it stop working? Do any sounds work or is it just in a media player? Can you tell us anything at all more? Quote We are all members helping other members. KenB Posted September 19, 2010 Posted September 19, 2010 You could try a System Restore to the 11th or 12th September. Start > Run .....type in ....msconfig .....ENTER Click on "Launch System Restore" Follow the restore wizard and select a date ( dark blue ) that is just prior to the start of your problem. Your system settings will restore to that date. Your data / photos etc will be fine. RandyL Posted September 20, 2010 Posted September 20, 2010 Unplug and plug in the connections again. yes i have checked and intalled latest drivers. i have installed windows after occuring of problem so system restore cannot restore the setting there is no red or yellow marks on sound driver in device manager i also re install sound driver but problem is still there As this is a compaq all the drivers should have been included after a reinstall. It's probably onboard sound so there is no connections other than your speaker jacks which you can try to pull out and plug in again. Try another set of speakers and try your speakers on another computer. What this points to is trial and error. But with the directx error it probably points to a failed onboard sound chip on the mobo considering what else you have tried. A reinstall failed. All connections secure. Drivers updated. No errors except DirectX. Speakers work. Sounds like the only thing left is the onboard sound on the mobo has failed. Time for a new mobo or computer. Have you contacted Compaq on this issue? Plastic Nev Posted September 25, 2010 Posted September 25, 2010 If as Randy suggests that the sound chip on the mother board has gone, you can install a sound card providing you have a PCI or PCIE slot, depending on which slot you have available, sound cards are available for both.
